Library Notes

Battle of the Books is starting - Please drop by and let Karen know if you are interested in participating. A complete list of books is available at www.akla.org/akasl/bb/bbhome.html

Thanks to all the new Library volunteers–I’m delighted with the response. If I haven’t called by now, you may be called after the holidays as schedules often change then. The students’ Op Group has opened the computer lab for unsupervised computer use during class time. Thanks to those volunteers who are serving during lunch and after school to keep the lab open.

College Finances

The Library has been busy during third period with the College and Career Planning class. The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education has information on your financial questions. Their website is www.state.ak.us/acpe . This is the agency frequently referred to as the Office of Student Loans. If there is enough demand, we can schedule a formal presentation by their reps. Let Karen Emmel know.

College Fair
The Anchorage College Fair is Monday and Tuesday, October 29 and 30. Steller students will attend on Tuesday (3rd period), 10:20-12.00. They may also attend with parents on Monday night from 6:00-8:30. Sign up in the library. I will need parents to drive, as students are not permitted to drive themselves. College Reps will be stopping by Steller as well. Look for them in the hall right outside the library, usually during lunch.

AKCIS
Alaska Career and Information System is a website containing a wealth of career, college, and scholarship information. Visit them at www.akcis.org (User name Steller, password akcis02). The site is so useful that I designed the college planning class around it. Visit this site, ask your students about it. I will be happy to show you its features. Drop by any morning, or all day Thursday.

PSAT
This test for Juniors and Sophomores will be on Saturday October 20, 8:30-11:30am. Please bring pencils, a calculator, and a snack. Sign up in the library; the cost is $13.00. You may pay Julie or Danyiel if Karen is not available. National Merit Scholarships are determined by standings on this test. Steller has 45 tests available this year. If we exceed that number, or if another high school is closer to you, you may make arrangements to take the test there. Just put in the Steller ID # 020007. Alternative Test date is Wed. Oct. 17 at KCC. Fee is $19.00. You must sign up in advance.

Scholarships
The latest East HS career resources scholarship bulletins are posted on the Steller website.

College Workshops

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

graduation2.gif The enthusiastic response to the last college night has inspired Paula, Mike and Karen to propose more workshops. Steller is such a small community that we could, very likely, offer “one on one” college counseling to everyone who is interested.

Other topics might be:

  • How to choose a college
  • Financial Aid 101
  • Testing Requirements - What and When: PSAT, PLAN, ACT, SAT, Subject Tests
  • How to apply
  • Concentrating on what needs to be submitted in addition to the application (transcripts, scores, supplement if required, etc)
  • Using the Internet in your college search
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Making the student portfolio
  • Scholarship search

We want to offer the workshops at a time that the largest groups of students and parents can benefit. Here are several suggestions for the best times :
1. Lunch on Thursdays (You name the hours; Karen is here all day.)
2. Immediately after school, or
3. Evenings

Please let one of us know what your first choice would be.

2007 College and Career Fair

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Egan Civic and Convention Center

October 29, 6-8:30PM

Parents Night

Financial aid workshops will be provided and all institutional representatives will be available to talk to parents. Please help your students by preparing them for this activity. Here are some suggestions:

• Students should have criteria for determining which college reps they will visit

• Students should have specific questions to ask the representatives

• Students can bring pre-printed address labels to put on mailing lists to save time

For more information prior to the Fair, call the Educational Opportunity Center at 274-5522.
