Utah Spring Intensive

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Explore the High Desert of the Colorado Plateau

Come join us for the Spring Intensive to the Colorado Plateau of Utah. This two-week adventure will take us to southeastern Utah for an exploration of the geology, history, and water issues of one of the most visually stunning areas in the US.

We’ll begin our exploration with a four-day, five-night canoe trip on the flat, open waters of the Green River, one of the major tributaries of the Colorado River. Following our river excursion, we’ll visit Arches National Park for a tour of the Fiery Furnace and some hikes to other formations within the park.

The last part of our trip will take us to the Grand Gulch Primitive Area, near Monticello, Utah. Here we will spend four days and three nights hiking Kane Gulch, Grand Gulch, and Bullet Canyon and exploring many Anasazi ruin sites including a fully restored kiva.

Between trips, we’ll stay in Moab at the Up the Creek Campground, where we will be within easy walking distance to restaurants, souvenir shops, and other places of interest.

You will need to be in good physical condition for this trip and it would be helpful if you had some backcountry hiking experience. We will meet several times prior to the trip to discuss the details and requirements of the trip including discussions about food, gear, hydration, clothing, and other issues.

Danielle will be coming along on the trip and will be able to provide additional support and expertise through her training with the National Outdoor Leadership Schools.

This is Steller’s second trip to this area and an incredible opportunity for students seeking an experience in an environment that is spectacularly beautiful and challenging. If this sounds like a trip that meets your interests, we would love to have you along.

The total cost for the trip will be between $1700 and $1800 dollars and the first non-refundable deposit of $600 is due by Wednesday, December 19th. Please remember that you can get as much as half of the trip cost paid for if you qualify for a travel scholarship. Ask Ken or Danielle for an application.

Winter Intensive Possibility - Jack’s Whistler Intensive

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Date: Jan 7 - 18, 2008
Trip to: Whistler, British Columbia
Course Length: 2 weeks

This is skiing and snowboarding to the extreme. Whistler, British Columbia, is the home of the largest ski resort in North America. Six male and six female students, Jack and possibly two adult chaperones will be flying to Seattle on January 7th. Travel will be arranged by the Anchorage School District on Alaska Airlines. The Steller group will then take a five hour bus ride to Whistler, B.C., where they will spend the next 10 days.

Students and parents alike will have 9 or 10 days of lift tickets to ski/snowboard both Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. The highest ski lift goes up to an elevation of 7,500 feet; the lowest lift begins at an elevation of 2,200 feet. this is an elevation change of 5,300 feet! There are 33 ski lifts and 17 restaurants on the two mountains, and the two longest ski runs are over 7 miles long.

Evening meals will be eaten together in one of our suites. Students will be in teams that take turns preparing the evening meals. Evenings will be filled with time for story telling, drying out clothing, maintaining equipment, board games, resting, movie-watching and walking around Whistler village.

On January 18th, participants will return to Seattle by bus and then fly back to Anchorage. Bring your camera and daily journal. This is a trip of a lifetime.

To reserve the best accommodations, $1,000 will be due from each student and parent chaperone by September 26th. The total cost of this trip is between $1,500 and $1,800 per person. this amount covers air fare, food, lodging, lift tickets, and a round-trip bus ride between Seattle and Whistler. All students will be required to have a U.S. passport. Credit Count: This will be a quarter P.E. credit for a letter grade. Please contact Jack at: davis_john@asdk12.org for further details and meeting dates.

This item was originally published in the Ole Steller Yeller, September 2007 edition.

Update based on Jack’s announcement at the All Community Meeting:
There is already a wait list for this trip. Also, an adult female chaperone is needed.

Philip’s January Intensive to Sunny Florida!

Friday, September 21st, 2007

Key Largo is the destination for my January intensive. We will be traveling to Miami sometime after January 8th where we will tour some local attractions in the Miami area. (The finalized group of travelers will decide the specific agenda for surfing and other tourist activities.) Then we will travel to Key Largo to begin the Institute of Marine Resources Development Foundation (MRDF) on the morning of the 13th and stay until the 20th of January. This intensive covers a wide range of topics, from marine ecology and conservation to the impact that man has on the fragile ecosystems of Florida. Please visit www.mrdf.org for more information about the Foundation and their mission.

Space is very limited! As soon as I have a committed group, I can make travel arrangements and determine a final price.

Here is a sample itinerary for the trip. Right now the cost of the Institute is $810, which includes room and all but two meals once we arrive at the Institute. Other expenses beyond this fee include, but are not limited to, airfare (anywhere from $600 to $900), transportation to Key West and Key Largo, Miami based activities (TBD), and hotel rooms for two nights in Miami. I am trying to arrange this trip for less than $2,000, if possible. I don’t expect it to cost more than $2,300, depending greatly upon the airfare rates for the group.

If you have any questions please contact me at fleckenstien_philip@asdk12.org or 742-4950. There will be informational meetings coming up soon!
