Presidential Inauguration Tour in January ‘09

ASD and Smithsonian Travel is offering a Presidential Inauguration Tour in January of 2009 and it promises to be an exciting learning experience for our students. Students will not only experience a wonderful tour of Washington DC but will also attend the Presidential Inauguration, Inaugural parade, and an Inaugural Ball held exclusively for Smithsonian Student Travelers! It promises to be an unforgettable hands-on-learning experience as our students participate in this historic event.

ASD and Smithsonian Travel have are making this trip affordable. The complete cost including airfare, hotel, most meals, tours, and security is $1714. But in order to lock in at this price, a deposit of $150 with an application is due by April 30th!

Steller Directory volunteer needed

A Steller parent trainee for the Steller Directory is needed in Fall ‘08. Please contact Teresa Scott at 727-7182 or rtrkscott@hotmail.com if interested. Or, come to the last Steller Parent Group meeting of the school year on Tuesday, April 23rd at 5:30 p.m. to discuss putting together the directory for the ‘09-’10 school year. It would be great to have a parent with the time and determination to do this important job. If you’re that parent, let Teresa know. Thank you.

Spring Prom help needed

Lunch Donations Requested

We have had many donations for lunch items throughout the year. Thank you to
all who have donated; however, our recent spat of cold, snowy weather
increased the number of students needing lunch. As a result, we still need
some items for students who forget or don’t have lunch. Suggested donations
include: Mac & Cheese (lunch size), granola bars, juice boxes, and plastic
spoons and forks. If you have specific questions please contact the school
nurse.

Women in Aviation Luncheon on April 12

Hey girls!  You are invited to discover, connect, and take action at this
year’s Women in Aviation Luncheon on April 12.  This program, organized by
the FAA and the Girl Scouts, will be held at UAA’s Aviation Technology
Building and includes a career panel, a lunch, a tour of UAA’s Technology
Center and hands-on activities.  Open to girls in middle/junior and high
school, this event is $10 and financial assistance is available.

the poster on the parent bulletin board, ask in the office for a flyer, or
call  248-2250.  You can also visit www.girlscouts.ak.org for a registration
form.

Aloha in Paradise, FRIDAY, March 28 Auction

March 28th is the big day/evening! The theme of the evening is Hawaiian paradise. The Steller gym will be transformed (with your help) into a beautiful oasis of warmth. Bring by your surfboards, lei’s, Hawaii themed posters and billboards, sarongs, themed shirts, even music and such like, We need them all - (temporarily of course). Contact Nina or leave a message with Julie or Danyiele (742-4950) in the office.
Mahalo (Thank you). Help is needed for set-up and break-down.

Please also be part of the effort by bringing a plate of your favorite appetizer/finger food to Steller on Friday, March 28th. There’s nothing quite like good food to encourage socializing and competitive bidding! Drop off your appetizer to share throughout the day at a convenient time for you.
The most important effort on your part is to come and enjoy all the festivities, make bids on the many, many glorious items. There are airline gift certificates, an Alaskan getaway package, $500 gift certificate to Allure Day Spa, a brand new Thule, and lots of wonderful artwork.

Auction preview is at 5:30 pm. Hawaiian Dancers perform at 6PM.

Teacher Workshop on Persia

World Affairs Coucil: A Teacher Workshop on Persia
The WACA is pleased to announce a teacher workshop on Persia for July 8 - 11, 2008 in Washington, DC. This exclusive workshop will offer 20 teachers the opportunity to meet with State Department officials, academics, and other Persian experts in an intimate setting to gain a comprehensive understanding of Persia’s politics and culture.
This workshop opportunity is open to any high school teacher, department head, or administrator.
Applications are due to Melissa Lawrence by e-mails at melissa@worldaffairscouncils.org or fax at 202-833-4555 by the end of the day on April 10, 2008. WACA anticipates letting applicants know their status after April 15.
There are three parts to the applications:
1) A one page letter of intent from the applicant explaining why this workshop will benefit them and what they intend to do with the information they learned working with other educators
2) A current resume
3) A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s local WAC that describes how the council and educator can work together to plan follow - up activities.

AAD Student Essay Contest

The American Academy of Diplomacy (AAD) is sponsoring an essay contest for students with a first prize of $8,000 and an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss their essay with a senior State Department official. The contest is open to any American citizen who is an undergraduate or graduate student enrolled during the Spring Semester of 2008 as a degree student in international studies or political science with an emphasis on international studies.
The AAD is looking for students to critically and creatively about evaluating foreign policy challenges. The essay is framed as an Action Memorandum to the US Secretary of State on one of six foreign policy challenges. Students are asked to write an essay of no more than 1500 words evaluating and making a recommendation on policy. The deadline for submission is June 9, 2008.
