Monthly Staff Luncheons

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Whereas:  Teachers sacrifice portions of their own lunch hour and classroom space everyday so that students can have a safe comfortable place to enjoy lunch . . .
Parent Group proposes re-instituting Monthly Staff Luncheons.  Luncheons will be provided by pairs of Advisory Groups working together, according to a pre-arranged calendar, one Wednesday each month throughout the school year.  A parent, yet to be named, will handle the overall organization with help from the Parent Liaisons of the scheduled Advisory Groups.  This will be a cooperative effort between parents and students—teachers should not have to make a single phone call, or reminder email.

The above proposal was passed last month, first by Parent Group, and then by students in Op Group.  We are seeking that “yet-to-be-named” parent described above to handle the overall organization. A good deal of the preliminary work is already completed.  Please contact Rochelle Wilhelm at 562-2558, or colliebarks@aol.com if you are interested in this fulfilling opportunity for a Parent volunteer.

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Any parents out there who have some time or inclination to help organize a Science storeroom?   Shannon needs help cleaning up dirty glassware, collating what we have and writing down what needs to be ordered fresh.  Anyone could do this at any time during the week, you could come regularly or you could help just once.  Please email or call Shannon if you think this opportunity might be for you! herda_shannon@asdk12.org - [phone 440 2522]

GET INVOLVED . . .

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

We have several vacant seats for Parent Reps and Alternates on the Ad Board for the 2008-09 school-year.  This week, the Parent Group is assembling a slate of nominees to present for election at the All Community Meeting on October 1.  Ad Board is an integral part of the decision-making process at Steller where parents, students, and staff come together to vote on policy issues.  Meetings are held once a month alternating between evenings and lunchtimes.  Parents are elected to a 2-year term.  Perhaps you would like to fulfill your volunteer hours by serving on this board, or know of another Steller parent you think would be an asset to the board.  Please forward names to the co-chairs of the Parent Group:  Rochelle Wilhelm, colliebarks@aol.com or Barbara Wohlforth, wohlforth_barbara@asdk12.org

Alaska State Fair Volunteer request

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Valued Volunteers (past and current),

August brings one of Alaska’s biggest events of the year, The Alaska State Fair. http://www.alaskastatefair.org/2008/index.html
This year is especially important as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Alaska and the upcoming merger between the Anchorage Museum and The Imaginarium.
As in the past, The Imaginarium will have a large area at the fair. This year the theme is “Space.” The Out to Space Exhibit will be traveling to the fair as with our outreach Planetarium.

I am looking for some of you wonderful volunteers to come out and join us at The Imaginiarum’s tent to greet and meet the public. Because of the nature of the fair it is not necessary to have been a previous or current volunteer to come and help out. Family and friends (14 years old and older) are invited to come and volunteer with us at the fair.
I have admissions passes available for all volunteers
If you bring 2 or more people for a full shift there are parking passes available.
The shifts are 5-6 hours long (but this is negotiable.)
A shuttle is available from the Imaginarium to the fair. (on a set schedule. please contact me for more info)
The shifts are as follows
Mon - Tues 12-4 and 4-8 (12-8 if you take the shuttle)
Friday 12-5 and 5-10
Saturday and Sunday 10-4 and 4-10

Because this is a special event you will get double time in addition to passes and a wonderful and memorable fair experience.

I really hope that you can come and help!

Thanks again volunteers. Your time and efforts are so appreciated and valued. We couldn’t make the Imaginarium what it is without you!

Thanks!!

Need parent help for Teacher’s lunch

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

The Early  Bird  Gets the Worm- Teacher Appreciation Lunch, Weds., April 30th

We are two parents of seventh graders in Troy’s Advisory Group who have volunteered to organize the Teacher Appreciation Luncheon this year. Wednesday, May 6 is National Teacher’s Day, and often the date in many schools for such events.  However, at Steller, this date falls in the first week of Intensives, and many members of our staff will be out of the building and unable to attend such an event.  Therefore, we have decided to take advantage of Steller’s notorious flexibility and hold our event a week earlier, on Wednesday, April 30—the early-bird gets the worm, so to speak.  We already have volunteers to supply decorations, tablecloths, two salads, desserts and beverages. We are seeking other seventh grade parents who will provide two entrees, bread, and a fruit plate/salad to serve approximately 25.  Please contact Rochelle Wilhelm at 562-2558 or email colliebarks@aol.com if you can help.

We would also encourage any Steller students or parents who had planned to sing notes or drop tokens of appreciation to staff during the official Teacher Week in May, to, instead, take advantage of this early-bird opportunity before teachers have flown, and students have left the nest of their regular classes.

Thank-you
Rochelle Wilhelm

A coveted environmental status that is earned through various energy efficiency measures.  It goes beyond recycling paper, cans and plastic.   James C, a student, is trying to organize a group of students, staff and parents to work on energy efficiency at Steller. Auction Date Change

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

The auction has been moved to Friday, March 28th. This will allow more time
for planning and gathering donations. We still needed donations (artwork, gift certificates, services, airline tickets, etc.) We also need parents and students to help gather those donations and help with the auction.
Thanks so much.
