WUE (The Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) Program) is a student exchange program that enables Alaskan residents to obtain access to educational opportunities that are not available in Alaska. There are three separate programs that fall under the WICHE program. They are: the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Program, which enables students to attend other WUE-participating institutions at a discounted rate; the WICHE Western Regional Graduate Program, which enables Alaskan residents to enroll at in-state tuition rates in masters and doctoral programs, provided those institutions are also participating in the program; and the Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP), which helps Alaskan residents to gain access to certain fields of professional education not available in Alaska. http://www.wiche.edu/sep  for  information and changes to the program.

ROTC MILITARY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 2008: DETAILS: To receive ROTC scholarship information for the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines, you must be planning to attend college during the 2007 academic year.  You can begin the application process in your junior year of high school. Disney’s Dreamers Academy, an enrichment event with a special appeal for African-American high school students, invites teenagers to apply for the academy, set for Jan. 17-20 at Walt Disney World. The academy is looking for 100 teens that show promise – but may need a little motivation. Radio personality Steve Harvey, one of the creators of the academy, said “it’s about the education of our young people who are oftentimes slighted and don’t have the chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and  job sets. ”Sessions will include interactive workshops, motivational talks with sports and entertainment celebrities, and discussionsled by Disney cast members and executives. High school students can be nominated by parents, legal guardians, schools, churches, social organizations, youth programs and themselves. Mark  Robbins, Dean of Syracuse University’s School of Architecture is desperately  seeking young men and women of color interested in pursuing a five year  professional degree in Architecture. He says he’s deeply committed to  bringing diversity to his field and has scholarship money set aside to fully  cover education costs for 10 students. According to him the Latino  enrollment in the school has increased substantially, but it’s harder to  attract Blacks. Syracuse University’s School of Architecture has a great  reputation and this seems like a terrific opportunity, so please pass this on  to everyone you know. America’s Natioanl Teenager Scholarship Organization State Pageant: Age Groups: Juniors 12-15, Seniors 16-18. America’s National Teenager Scholarship Organization offers the chance to participate in a pageant that combines glamour with goal-driven young women to five the character-building experience of a lifetime.  The program recognizes young women for academic achievement, school and community involvement, communication and leadership skills and individuality. 10/30/07  HORATIO ALGER ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP:  Eligibility criteria are as follows: Enrolled full time as a high school senior, progressing normally toward graduation in spring/summer of 2007, with plans to enter college in the United States no later than the fall following graduation.  Intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution (students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then transfer to a four-year institution). Critical financial need, preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family.  Involvement in co-curricular and community service activities. Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.  U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Students must reside  in the U.S. or attend a Dept.  of Defense or Dept. pf State school.  Scholarships range in award value from $1,000 to $20,000.  To apply submit your application online at www.horatioalger.com/scholarships.  Application deadline is October 30, 2007.

10/31/07  BP Process Technology Scholarship: Applicants must be an Alaska resident  This scholarship is for students who are enrolling or currently enrolled in the Process Technology two-year degree program offered at University of Alaska – Anchorage or Fairbanks, or Kenai. Scholarship retention will be evaluated at the end of each semester and will be based on student performance against the requirements as described below.  Students have up to three years to complete the Process Technology degree program.  The maximum funding level of any scholarship is $12,000.  While BP offers other scholarships, each selected student for the Process Technology Program may receive only one BP Scholarship. Students may apply for only one level of the Process Technology Scholarship.  This scholarship is provided for students who seek training for permanent employment in the industries that use and control mechanical, physical or chemical processes to produce a final product. This scholarship will provide for training for those who are interested in a career in Process Technology and the challenges of controlling operations in a process industry.   Application deadline is Oct. 31, 2007

10/31/07  Prudential Spirit of the Community: Statewide award $1,000, a silver medal, and a all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. National Honoree receive additional $5,000 award, gold medal, crystal trophy and $5,000 grants from Prudential Foundation for nonprofit charitable organizations of their choice.  Open to all students grades 5-12 as of Oct. 31, 2007, and is a legal resident of one of the 50 states of the United States and District Columbia; has engagaed in volunteer activity that occurred at least in part after September 1, 2005.  All applications are due to Ms. Gaither in the CRR no later than Wednesday, October 31, 2007.  Applications  are available online at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential.

10/31/07  Coca-Cola Scholarship: The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is a merit-based scholarship awarded to 250 high school seniors each year. Fifty of these are four-year $20,000 scholarships ($5,000 per year for four years), while 200 are designated as four-year $10,000 scholarships ($2,500 per year for four years). The scholarships can be used at any accredited U.S. college or university. In order to be eligible for a Coca-Cola Scholarship, you must be: a CURRENT high school or home-school senior anticipating graduation from a school or program in the United States during the academic year of the application, a U.S. Citizen; U.S. National; U.S. Permanent Resident; Temporary Resident (legalization program); Refugee; Asylee; Cuban-Haitian Entrant; or Humanitarian Parolee; planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution; carrying a minimum 3.00 GPA at the end of your junior year of high school. Applicants may NOT be: children or grandchildren of employees, officers, or owners of Coca-Cola bottling companies, The Coca-Cola Company or any other bottler or Company divisions or subsidiaries.  Applications available online at www.coca-colarscholars.org.  Paper application forms nor printed versions of the on-line application will not be accepted. 10/31/07  AARP Foundation Women’s Scholarship Program: Provides scholarship funds to women 40 plus seeking new job skills, training, and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.  The scholarship is available to eligible individuals with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. Applicant must be  a female 40 or over (as of October 31, 2007), be able to demonstrate financial need, be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within 6 months of the scholarship award date.  The online application can be found at www.aarp.org/womensscholarship.  The access key is AFWSP.  Application deadline is October 31, 2007.

11/01/07  The United State Senate Youth Program’s Washington Week Scholarship: The William Randolph Hearst Foundation will make available to each delegate who participates in this year’s program a $5,000 scholarship award, subject to the conditions and requirements specified in the program regulations.  Additional information concerning the scholarship will be given to delegates upon their arrival in Washington. Applicant Qualifications: A currently enrolled high school junior or senior student living in Alaska (irrespective of race, national origin, gender or financial need) is eligible for the program provided he or she has not previously been a program recipient; is now a permanent resident of the United States and has a parent or guardian legally residing in Alaska; and serves in any one of the following student government elected offices: Student body president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer; Class president, vice president, secretary, or treasurer; Student council representative; Student representative to district, regional or state-level civic or educational organization. Exceptions to the residency rule are made for Department of Defense Education Activity. The Washington date is March 1-8, 2008. 11/01/07  VFW Voice of Democracy Patriotic Audio Essay Competition:  Record your original 3-5 minute (+ or – 5 seconds) essay on a standard cassette tape or CD on this year’s theme.  Open to students grades 9-12, who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home school. Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners receive an all expensive paid trip to Washington, D.C. in March.  Grand Prize: $30,000 scholarship.  Application and information available at www.vfw.org.  Essay & audio must be in the Career Resource Room no later than 8 a.m. November 1, 2007. 11/23/07  NASSP Principal’s  Leadership Award: The Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) provides the opportunity for every secondary school principal to nominate one senior for consideration for a college scholarship. Annually 100 winners are selected for the $1000 scholarships. The PLA program is sponsored by Herff Jones and administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Nominees are selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. Students also were required to write an essay. In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities - an essential part of the school curriculum - as well as academic performance; the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. 11/28/07 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY): This year, thousands of high school students like you will attend HOBY programs, including Community Leadership Workshops, U.S. State Leadership Seminars and the World Leadership Congress. We will present multiple viewpoints on important issues and encourage you to think critically about leadership, in addition to identifying your own particular leadership strengths. The youth participants, referred to as “HOBY Ambassadors,” will enjoy experiential learning in the forms of:
· Inspiration from keynote speakers
· Interaction with community leaders from education, government, business, media and the non-profit sector
· Participation in community service projects that impact the lives of those in need
· Leadership games and activities helping you to develop skills in organization, communication, problem solving and goal setting

11/30/07  Excellence in 3D Animation Award: The Excellence in 3D Animation Award is a $1,000 cash gift awarded quarterly by Troy Studios to encourage students to pursue Graphics Arts and Animation. The award winners are chosen based on their entries in a contest. The contest is open to all students of all nations, regardless of field of study. To enter the contest, students should download free software from the http://www.animoids.com website and then use the software to create animated characters or animated movie props and sets. The same software allows students to upload their completed works for entry into the contest. The software comes with instructions on how to build, animate and upload characters.

There are four quarterly deadlines each year (28 Feb, 31 May, 31 Aug and 30 Nov).

Students may submit more than one entry for each contest.

12/14/07 The Alaska Air Carriers Ass0ciation Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship: Open to students who are looking for a future in aviation. $1000 scholarship will be awarded.  Application available in the CRR or at www.alaskaaircarriers.org.  Application deadline is December 14, 2007.

12/15/07 AXA Achievementsm Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report: The scholarship awards $670,000 annually. Fifty two students – one from each state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico – receive scholarships of $10,000. Of those 52 students, 10 students are chosen as national winners and receive an additional $15,000 scholarship award, a new computer and an opportunity for an internship with AXA Financial.

Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrated ambition and drive, determination to set and reach goals and the ability to succeed in college.

12/15/07 American Civil Liberties Union Foundation Student Activist Scholarship Program: 15-$5000 scholarships to high school students.  Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to civil liberties, a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time degree-seeking student; and have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation. Financial need will increase the students chances of qualifying for the scholarship.  Application deadline is December 15, 2007.  Application available in the CRR.

12/15/07 Dobson Pride Scholarship: 100-$2500 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school students.  The applicant or someone in the immediate household must be a customer of Cellular One from Dobson Cellular Systems or family member of a Dobson employee.   Applicants for the scholarship must have a minimum gpa of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and be a  prospective high school graduate.  Scholarship applications are available on line at www.dobson.net.  Applications must be postmarked no later then December 15, 2007.

02/1/08  National Peace Essay Contest: Promotes serious discussion among high school students, teachers, and national leaders about international peace and conflict resolution today and in the future; Complements existing curricula and other scholastic activities; Strengthens students’ research, writing, and reasoning skills; and Meets National Contents Standards. Students are eligible to participate if they are in grades nine through twelve in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories, or if they are U.S. citizens attending high school overseas. Students may be attending a public, private, or parochial school or participating in a high school correspondence program. Entries from home-schooled students are also accepted. Students must be in grades nine through twelve at the Contest deadline. Previous first-place state winners and immediate relatives of directors or staff of the Institute are not eligible to participate. Previous honorable mentions are eligible to enter. Students may take part in the contest with the sponsorship of a coordinator—parent, teacher, school club, youth group, community group, or religious organization. There must be a contest coordinator—someone in the school or community who can review essays and act as the key contact between participants and the Institute. If there is no designated coordinator at your school or organization, you may ask a parent, teacher, youth group leader, club sponsor, parent, or other adult to be your coordinator. It is to your advantage to have someone review your essay before you submit it to make sure it is complete, has all the necessary forms, is free from spelling and grammatical errors, and addresses the topic. There is no formal process to become a coordinator. The postmark deadline for applications for the 2006-2007 National Peace Essay Contest is February 1, 2007. Winners are notified by May 1, 2007. The award week is held in Washington, D.C. every June. Applications are accepted throughout the year. The Contest winners from each state earn money for their college or university studies. For the 2007–2008 contest, first-place state winners will receive college scholarships of $1,000. 12/31/07  The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program, a $1 billion initiative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, awards competitive scholarships for undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest.  GMS scholarships are available to African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students who demonstrate academic excellence, community service, and strong leadership skills.  Scholarships are also available for graduate-level education in the following discipline areas: education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, and science.  Scholarships pay for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses not already paid for by other financial aid.  In addition to financial assistance, GMS offers leadership development programs including mentoring services and an online resource center for internship, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities, as well as graduate and post-graduate resources and conferences.  The scholarship application process is highly competitive; students are urged to submit their nomination packets as soon as possible.  Students are eligible to apply if they:  1. Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander, or Hispanic American; 2.  Are a citizen or legal permanent resident or national of the United States;  3. Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.00 (unweighted) scale; 4.  Will be entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking freshman in the Fall of 2007; 5. Have demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extracurricular, or other activities;  6. Meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; 7. 03/20/068 Ayn Rand Anthem Essay Contest: Over $57,000 in prize money.   First Prize-$2,000, 5 Second Prizes-$500, 10 Third Prizes-$200, 45 Finalist Prizes-$50 and 175 Semifinalist Prizes-$30.  Essays will be judged on both style and content.  Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate, and logically organized.  Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of Anthem. Essay must be no fewer than 600 and no more than 1200 words in length, and must be typewritten and double-spaced.  One entry per student. Open to students in grades 9-10. Submit your essay online at www.aynrand.org/contests.  Entry deadline is March 20, 2008.

03/31/08  VFW Young American Creative Patriotic Art Awards. Open to students in grades 9 – 12.  Student must  attend school in the same state as the sponsoring Ladies Auxiliary.  Home-schooled students are egiible; foreign exchange students are not.  National awards $1500 to $10,000.  Applications are available in the CRR.  Deadline is March 31, 2008.

03/31/08  Alaska Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects Academic Scholarship: Must be a 4 yr. Alaska resident and graduating from an Alaskan High School; evidence of application to an accredited landscape architectural program; completion of the application and essay. Preference will be given to Alaskans of Native heritage or those that demonstrate financial need.    Application and more information available at www.asla.org.  Application deadline is March 31, 2008.

04/01/08  2008 President’s Volunteer Service Awards: Every student is eligible and can nominate themselves or be nominated by another.  Nomination forms are available in the CRR.  Students 12-14 have to contribute at least 50 hrs. of volunteer serviceof all kinds in the past 12 months by April 1, 2008 are qualified. Students 15-25 at least 100 hrs. of volunteer service required to qualify. Deadline is April 1, 2008.

04/06/08  Asian Alaska Cultural Scholarship: For students of Japanese Ancestry. The scholarships will range from $300 to $500.  Minimum gpa required is a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applications available in the CRR.  Application deadline is April 6, 2008.

Make a new friend and have a lot of fun.  Be a High School Big.
The main role of a High School Big is to be a positive role model and friend to an elementary student.  You must be at least 16 years of age.  Be willing to make a minimum one-year (school year) commitment. Have viable means of transportation (if needed for visits) Be committed to consistently seeing a child every week. ACT (No Writing) $30.00  ACT Plus Writing $44.50  Late Registration Basic fee + $20.50

Check www.actstudent.org to find out when early scores will be posted after your test.  There is a $8.50 fee each time a set of scores is viewed during early scores period.   Score reports are normally mailed within 4-7 weeks after the test date.  If you take ACT Plus Writing, your report will be mailed when all your score, including Writing, are available. If you miss the regular deadline, you can register during the late period above, but you must pay the additional nonrefundable late fee.
