ASD Gifted Mentorship Program Information and News

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The Gifted Mentorship Program is designed for gifted/talented juniors and seniors who are seeking additional academic challenges in the adult workplace.  Students must apply for the program and go through a training process before the program begins.  Students are then paired with a professional in the field of the student’s choice and create an independent study course paired with the program’s requirements.  This program offers a great opportunity to try a career in a professional environment before investing the time and money in higher education.  The mentorship program also looks great on transcripts and resumes, as well as potentially providing excellent and relevant professional references.

The program runs throughout the school year for qualifying juniors and seniors, including a summer school option.  Students can qualify for the program based their GPA,  standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, an interview with coordinator Ms. Lisa Wiley, and/or outstanding leadership, motivation, or community service experience.  Please visit the school district’s website for more information at  www.asdk12.org/projects/gifted

Jean Poulsen visits Steller on Tuesday during lunch in the library and is available after school by appointment to talk about the program with parents and students.  You can also email her at poulsen_jean@asdk12.org

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

2011-2012 Application Deadline:  September 30, 2011
Applications can be turned into Jean in person NO LATER than September 30, 2011 – during lunch in the library or to the office where she has a mailbox.
(Mandatory training sessions will be announced in October.)

Band and Orchestra Reinstated

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Good news. If you haven’t already heard, Band and Orchestra have been reinstated at Steller. Sally and Nobuo will also be returning. The classes will run the same as last year during first hour. Let’s make sure we take advantage of this and fill their classes. Music is good for the soul!

On another note, I ask for your patience with Drama and Choir clubs. I am still figuring out when to offer them. As soon as I have it down, I’ll pass the news on to you.
