Counselor’s Corner

tall-owl.jpgHello to all new and returning Steller students and parents! It’s hard to believe that one month has already gone by since school began. Indeed, August 22nd dawned, appropriately enough, cloudy, rainy and chilly, bringing to mind the immortal words of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, “Our revels now are ended.” The halls were awash with fresh faces teeming with enthusiasm as the 2007-08 school year commenced. By now, students have settled into new classes and routines.

For those new to the Steller community, my name is Linda Samorajski and I am a certified counselor here at Steller on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. My office is located in Room 156 of the Computer Lab and my door is always open; please stop by and say “hi,” or email me and let me know if I can be of assistance.

Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and change, when students begin the process of separating from parents and exploring and defining who they are and what they will become. Students are constantly evaluating their strengths, skills, and abilities, while the biggest influence is their peer group. They are searching for a place to belong and rely on peer acceptance and feedback. They face increased pressures in our rapidly changing world regarding risk behaviors while exploring the boundaries of acceptable behavior and healthy relationships. They need guidance in making complex decisions and dealing with academic pressures as they face high-stakes testing and the challenges of college admissions. Our students face unique and diverse challenges, both personally and developmentally, that impact academic achievement.

The role of a counselor is myriad, but primarily I am here to advocate for every student and to affirm and assist all students in their social, emotional, behavioral, and educational growth. Periodically throughout the year I run small groups dealing with various issues. My goal is to provide support and guidance for our students on their journey. wide-owl.jpgI am here at Steller and available anytime to help students individually with issues, dilemmas, decisions, or just to talk.

I look forward to meeting and working with all of you!

Linda Samorajski, M.S.C.P.
