Spotlight on Student Volunteers
Steller Student Volunteers Shine Through the Day and Night!
Part of the Steller Secondary School philosophy states that “the balance between freedom and responsibility will result in active community members,” and active Steller students have been, helping numerous community service organizations with energy and enthusiasm.
Over the holidays students had heaps of holiday fun while bringing sunshine and hope into the lives of others. On Friday, November 23, Steller students helped the Anchorage Downtown Partnership, our school business partner, with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony in Town Square. Inside at the Performing Arts Center, students worked with the children of military families invited to a special reception marking the occasion. Those that came and worked with Shannon and Linda were Laura J., Allison C. and Angela C.
The weekend before Christmas Nina and a crew of elves wrapped gifts at the Midtown Title Wave, another Steller school business partner, for well over 8 hours. Congratulations! All tips they received have been earmarked for the upcoming Spain trip. That same weekend Shannon’s Advisory group wrapped gifts for charity at both the Downtown and Midtown locations. Thanks to all that participated, including Eric B., Maddie C., Claire F., Hannah G., Kelli H., Laura J., Malcolm K., Lena P., Katie S., Elise S., and Liz T.. Parents that assisted with wrapping included Sue Ban, Bobbi Gibson, Betsy Mckracken, Margaret Pohjola, Kim Tix, and Wilma Whealy. Students logged well over 15 hours wrapping! Thanks to all for participating!
On Monday, December 31, a group of students helped with the Anchorage Downtown Partnership Annual New Year’s Eve Fire and Ice Celebration in Town Square. Kari Pedersen and Linda readied the inside of the Performing Arts Center for a reception honoring donors and benefactors of the event. Afterwards, Wade and Tore B., Emerald K., Linda, and Cassi S. helped outside selling light sticks and distributing viewing glasses for the fireworks which occurred at 8:00 p.m. under clear skies.
You all are a stellar model of stellar community service here at Steller.
