Advisory Board
II. Steller Advisory Board
If you’re so inclined, and a currently enrolled high-school student, you can become a voting member of the Steller Advisory board, the second most powerful body in the school. Everyone can attend, though only representatives can vote.
Bylaw speak: The primary function of the Advisory Board is to advise the general Steller Community and to carry out all the directives and decisions regarding Steller between the General Steller Community Meetings. Policy decisions may be appealed to the General Steller Community at the Community Meetings.
Translation: The Advisory Board affects policy changes (e.g. the orientation policy) and bylaws changes. If, as a community member, you don’t like an action of the Ad. Board, you can appeal to the All Community meeting.
Staff members have one representative per every 300 students to the Ad. Board, students have one representative per counseling group, the parent group has half the number of student representatives. The principal attends and gives reports at these meetings, but will only vote when he or she chooses to.
Bylaw Speak: Students (must be) representing their constituents to the respective Advisory Board and the respective board to their constituents.
Translation: Even if you’re not an Ad. Board representative, your rep. should be representing you, the constituent. If you don’t think they’re doing that, talk to them - it’s their job to listen to you.
Student and staff representatives will be elected at the beginning of the school year. Parent elections are more complicated - for more information, see Section II.D.1.c of the Bylaws.
If you want to be a rep, but don’t think you can attend every meeting, be an alternate! If your rep can’t go to a meeting, they’ll give you a call, and you get to vote.
For information on Advisory Board and Operational Group officers, see the Student Government section.
Bylaw-speak: All meetings will be open to the general Steller community and all discussions at these meetings will include everyone present.
Translation: Speak up! You are allowed to talk, even if you can’t vote.
