What Are Some Unique Steller Events?

Activity Days

Steller has several activity days each year.  There is usually one at the beginning and end of the year, and others in between as time permits.  On activity days, the entire school takes a much enjoyed break from the daily routine of classes and gets together for fun.  Activity days are often times when staff and the entire student body travel to a park or other outdoor site to play games, chat with friends, eat and relax.  At the end of the year, people traditionally sign each other’s yearbooks.  However, there have been several activity days when we have all stayed in the school, gone to see plays in the community, or split up into counseling groups to travel to many different places.

There are two types of activity days - planned and spontaneous.  The entire school knows in advance about the planned activity days, unlike the spontaneous activity days which have been put on by counseling groups or classes who have either secretly planned the festivities, or have decided on the spur of the moment that a day to de-stress was needed.  All spontaneous days must be approved by the school in advance.

ACTIVITY DAYS DO NOT HAPPEN IF NO ONE PLANS THEM!  It is not the responsibility of the staff to plan activity days.  In the past the student body has voted to have an activity day, and then the students who proposed it didn’t plan it any further.  When this happens, the activity day is dropped.

Steller Olympics

The Steller Olymipics occurs annually in May.  It is one of the most beloved school events - a day of games, contests, athletic and non-athletic events.  Past events have included egg toss, drawing contest, building a house of cards, a chess tournament, karaoke, backwards spelling bee, skateboard obstacle course, 100 yard dash and 440 race, leg wrestling, arm wrestling, Twister and many others.  All the students are randomly split into groups.  The groups then appoint a team captain, who is responsible for turning in paperwork and doing other odd jobs.  Each team is also assigned a staff member as well, who can particpate in events if they wish.  They meet together a few times to come up with a team name, flag, costumes, and cheer, as well as decide who wants to do each event.

On the day of the Steller Olympics, the teams get together, parade around the school, do a team event, than split up for their activities.  Points are given for showing up at events as well as winning, and running totals are posted so you can see how your team is doing.  At the end of the day everyone meets in a big group again for ribbons to be handed out to the winners, and the winning team is announced.

Planning Days

There is a planning day each year.  Teachers meet together to plan out their goals for the year and assess previous goals.  Students break up into small groups to do the same.  Since there are so many students, each room is usually  assigned a topic, and the day is split into several sessions so students can work on several different goals/discussion topics.  Notes are taken for each discussion and then compiled so checks on how far the goals have progress can be made in the future.  The planning day committee is always a great way to get involved at Steller.

Teach-Ins

Teach-Ins are a wonderful opportunity to get the whole school focused on an issue.  They are planned by a small group of students with a few staff members.  This committee lines up speakers and activities.  A few past topics have been the spruce bark beetle infestation, multicultural awareness, and law as it affects youth.
