What is the Grievance Committee?
If you get through your years at Steller without ever having a conflict with another student or staff member, or a disagreement with some administrative action, you’re a rare person indeed. The simple fact is that wherever you spend your school years, you will have problems. The difference is that, at Steller, you have the power to work directly towards their resolution.
The first step is to always see your advisor, unless it is a safety or discipline issue and then you should talk to the principal. Your advisor should work with the you and either the staff member or other student to resolve the conflict. The school counselor is also available to do a mediation or you can try peer mediation. As a last resort you can ask for the grievance process to resolve the problem. This very rarely is necessary.
Who is on the Grievance Committee?
There are two students, two parents, and one teacher on the Grievance Committee. The entire student body elects the two student members.
How do I Submit a Grievance?
You must submit your grievance in written form within 5 school days of the act or problem. Include what the grievance is, why you consider it a problem, and what you wish to see happen to resolve it. The principal may make a decision about it at this point, or set up grievance hearing times. Grievances which require immediate action will be heard within 3 school days of your written notice.
What Happens at the Grievance Hearing?
During the hearing, all persons involved (teachers, counselors, witnesses, and so on) testify before the committee.
How Soon Will I Know the Committee’s Decison?
The Grievance Committee discusses the testimony given and makes their decision. All persons involved in the grievance are then notified within 2 school days after the hearing.
