What are Intensives?

Intensives are an opportunity not offered at many other schools - the opportunity to study a subject intensively for two weeks, without worrying about other classes getting in the way. They happen twice a year and are two week blocks of time where you meet with the same class everyday and earn a quarter credit. Trips are often offered, with some teachers going as far away as Russia or Spain, and others doing college trips in the US. Some past intensives include….

Art Studio
Performance Dance
Calligraphy
Soccer
Skiing and Snowboarding
College Trip
Hawaiii Trip
Marine Biology in Florida
Bike Trip to Denali
Urban/Rural Youth Exchange
Peace Garden
Science Olympiad/Robotics
Photography
Alaska Theater of Youth Drama
Steller Cookbook
Spain Trip

What was your favorite intensive?

Definitely the Russia Trip. A bunch of us “science nerds” went to Russia to study astroscience and culture, and we had a complete blast. It was great that there were only ten of us, too, since we got to know each other well. The airplane ride was long and boring, but, being Stellerites, we made it fun and wrote lengthy and horrible poems about fish and trigonometry.

The Florida Trip and the Drama intensive where we put on M*A*S*H. I got to go to Florida with my best friend and we went snorkeling and did tons of fun stuff. We also went to Disneyland.

I liked the Alaska ferry trip. It was a great learning experience and we got to hang out with all our friends and have fun.

The soccer one and the winter activity one - we went skiing and camping and built snow forts and stuff like that.

I liked the England trip. There was a “British lit” class before the trip itself, and I had to read a lot of literature, something I hadn’t done before. It opened my eyes to how cool literature is.

Swing dancing, because it was…. swing dancing! It was really fun.
