SUMMER SEMINAR ACADEMIC COURSE <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Perspectives on Freedom, Authority, and <\/span><\/strong>Polarization<\/span><\/strong> will<\/span> be co-taught by two amazing faculty, X<\/span>\u00cc\u00b1<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/span>unei Lance Twitchell (joining us for the first part of the seminar) and Sharon Schuman.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Course Description:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Gathered on the ancestral home of the Sheetk<\/span>\u00ca\u00bc<\/span>\u00c3\u00a1<\/span> \u00e1\u00b8\u00b4<\/span>w<\/span>\u00c3\u00a1<\/span>an (People of the Outer Coast of<\/span> <\/span>Sheey), this seminar explores freedom, authority, and polarization through a series of readings and discussions that include diverse voices that shape and challenge our concepts of place, belonging, identity, and interactions. Readings will include Indigenous oral literatures<\/span>, theories of cultural critique, classics of Western literature, and voices from the margins. The seminar focuses on freedom & authority as contested concepts and as potential remedies to polarization. Students will explore their developing views on these topics within a challenging context of self-government, labor, and community service.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mission of Outer Coast is audacious: to prepare its students to make <\/span><\/a>virtuous change<\/span><\/a> in a world that, with every passing, tumultuous day needs it <\/span>ever<\/span> more. The 2018 Summer Seminar will allow us to test, refine, and further explore how to do this best.<\/span><\/p>\n
