The new\u00c2\u00a0FAFSA<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form for the 2020-2021 academic year will be available on Tuesday, October 1<\/b>.\u00c2\u00a0 Students who are interested in attending college\u00c2\u00a0or job training programs of approximately 2 years<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0should fill out the form to find out how much Pell Grant (free money), Federal Work Study, and federal student loan aid they will be eligible for. \u00c2\u00a0Filling out the FAFSA does\u00c2\u00a0not<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0obligate anyone to take out a loan, but it can reveal eligibility for Pell Grants and Work Study aid that many are not aware of.\u00c2\u00a0 Did you know that there are far more Alaskans who are eligible for a Pell Grant than the number who actually apply for one?<\/div>\n

If you know a student who has been in foster care or who is homeless, specific information about accessing federal student aid for these groups is available at\u00c2\u00a0https:\/\/studentaid.ed.gov\/sa\/eligibility<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Those who would like to get a free early estimate of their eligibility for Pell Grant, Federal Work Study, and federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans can find out by using the U.S. Department of Education\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0FAFSA4caster<\/a>.<\/p>\n

FAFSA filers no longer have to wait to fill out the FAFSA until they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve filed their federal income tax forms in April.\u00c2\u00a0 Due to a change in the law, FAFSA filers should use their \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prior prior\u00e2\u20ac\u009d tax returns.\u00c2\u00a0 So on October 1, use the 2018 federal tax and income information to fill out the 2020-2021 FAFSA. The FAFSA also has the\u00c2\u00a0Data Retrieval Tool<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that will fill in the federal tax information automatically.<\/p>\n

For those interested in the\u00c2\u00a0Alaska Education Grant<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0or the\u00c2\u00a0Alaska Performance Scholarship<\/a>, they must file their FAFSA as soon as they can after October 1 but\u00c2\u00a0no later than<\/i>\u00c2\u00a0June 30th<\/sup>\u00c2\u00a0and select at least one Alaskan institution of higher education.<\/p>\n
