We will focus on skills throughout, from the beginning player to the more experienced. Each day will start with warm-ups and skills building, followed by an assortment of games and tournaments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Credit Count: P.E.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Class Fee: To Be Determined<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gerald &#8211; Outdoor Activity<\/strong><br \/>\nClass will consist of outdoor games, hiking at Eagle River Outdoor Center<br \/>\nand biking around Anchorage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philip &amp; Leigh Anne &#8211; <\/strong><strong>Survivor: Everything you would ever need to know to survive the apocalypse.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do you know what it takes to survive? If not, join Leigh Anne and Philip to learn all of the skills you will need to survive in any situation. We will review urban and wilderness survival techniques to include self-defense, shelter building, first aid, orienteering and living off the land. This intensive will have at least one overnight trip and many activities that will involve the theme of survival.<\/p>\n<p>Cost : Under $50 . The actual cost is still to be determined.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><strong>Natalie &#8211; <\/strong>Encaustics <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid\/paste is then applied to a surface\u00e2\u20ac\u201dusually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.<\/p>\n<p>Metal tools and special brushes can be used to shape the paint before it cools, or heated metal tools can be used to manipulate the wax once it has cooled onto the surface.<\/p>\n<p>Our goal will be to make one small, one medium, and one larger project for display at the end of the intensive.\u00c2\u00a0 We will head to the park to get inspiration for our medium project.\u00c2\u00a0 We will take a field trip to downtown to the museum and some of the art galleries to get inspiration for our larger project.\u00c2\u00a0 At the end of the two weeks we will have an art show to display our work for parents and other students.<\/p>\n<p>Fee $50 &#8211; $75<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tools that we will need can be used again.\u00c2\u00a0 We may consider donating them to the art class when we are finished.<\/p>\n<p>.25 Elective<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Shanley &#8211; Emergency Trauma Technician (ETT)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(This class will be taught by the Chugiak Volunteer Fire &amp; Rescue Co. and Shanley will assist.)<\/p>\n<p>This class focuses on the essentials of emergency medical and trauma care. This class will cover an introduction to the EMS system, legal and ethical issues to emergency care, medical terminology and basic anatomy and physiology as well as the care of patients in emergency situations.\u00c2\u00a0 Upon successful completion and examination you will receive CPR certification, and for participants who are at least 14 years of age, a 2 year registration as an Emergency Trauma Technician.<\/p>\n<p>Class fee will be dependent on size of the class ~$250 per student (less if more than 10 students register.)<\/p>\n<p>.25 Science Elective<\/p>\n<p>Grades:7-12<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Danielle &#8211; Literature and the Environment Intensive<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you have a love of exploring the natural world, this intensive is for you.<br \/>\nStudents will explore the natural world through readings, writing, discussion and first hand experiences outside, with possible field trips to the Seward Sealife Center and the Eagle River Nature Center.<br \/>\nReadings for this class will include topics in environmental science and activism as well as nature writing from authors who explore the relationship between humans and the natural world in fiction, non-fiction and poetry.<br \/>\nStudents will choose whether they want to focus on creative writing or research-oriented writing on an environmental topic of their choice.<br \/>\nStudents will earn a quarter English Elective credit for this intensive.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Troy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Outdoorsman\/woman Intensive<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This intensive will set its itinerary at two meetings prior to the intensive. Those of you that decide to take this intensive will have some say in the content of the course. However stick to the above theme. It is also my desire to put each student through the hunter safety course offered by the fish and game. I will be working on this to see if it is possible for them to come in so you may get the hunter education certification. This would probably include a field day also. I see this intensive as several modules that have a focus all relating to the great outdoors.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dan Lu &#8211; East Asian Films \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Asian Culture and Arts<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do you like watching movies? Here are more than 9 movies in 9 days!<\/p>\n<p>Do you like hands on arts? Here are all kinds of Chinese arts!<\/p>\n<p>Are you interested in going to East Asia some day? Here are the opportunities to see some cities before you go!<\/p>\n<p>This intensive will look into Asian culture and arts through some contemporary Chinese, Japanese, and South Korean movies. We will watch different types of films, including movies telling the similar story but produced in different countries. We will discuss the cultural differences between western and eastern culture. We will learn some simple Chinese\/Japanese\/Korean words and sentences from the movies. We will do hands-on art activities everyday, including Chinese writing, painting, knotting, dancing, paper cutting, \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6etc. We will enjoy Asian music, wild nature, and cities during lunch and breaks.<\/p>\n<p>This class will consist of watching films, group discussions, individual reflections, research of the culture behind the movies, and arts activities.<\/p>\n<p>SOME OF THE MOVIES MAY BE RATED \u00e2\u20ac\u0153R\u00e2\u20ac\u009d SO YOU WILL NEED A PARENT PERMISSION SLIP FOR THOSE MOVIES. MOVIE LIST WILL BE DECIDED ON PRIOR TO THE CLASS.<\/p>\n<p>Class Fee: $5<\/p>\n<p>Credit: Social Study Elective or Elective<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Karen J &#8211; Introduction to Calligraphy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;Please come join us in this exceptionally informative, playful and hands-on introduction to letterform. As time allows we will be exploring a multitude of techniques, ideas and other styles (hands) of calligraphy to enhance our new-found skill.<\/p>\n<p>No prior experience necessary, 7th-12th grades. Only requirement is for the student to have a genuine interest in learning letterform and the desire to experiment with a wide variety of ideas.<\/p>\n<p>In this intensive we hope to cover embossing techniques, basic paper molding, rubber and chunky stamp design ideas, layout and design, working with handmade papers, pressed flowers and leaves, circular and split nib writing, and a stunningly fun technique called &#8220;Rainbow Writing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If time allows, we will explore, and study a Gothic hand, a print type hand called Bookhand and rotund little majuscule called Uncial. Designing journals, original artwork on many levels and creating handmade cards are some of our goals in this intensive.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions, ideas or suggestions, please contact Karen. There will be a multitude of samples, pens, supplies and books that will be available for all students to explore and experiment with as we learn the art of beautiful handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>This will be a pass\/fail intensive art or elective-elective with the requirement that the student will complete two, in depth, calligraphy pieces by the end of our two weeks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cost: $30 material fees.\u00c2\u00a0 Student will also be responsible for obtaining their calligraphy pen set, roughly $15\/$25 from either Blaine&#8217;s or Michael&#8217;s. Blaine&#8217;s offers a discount to all students.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ken &#8211; Video Production<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ever want to make a short movie or a commercial? Do you dream of becoming the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese? Well, you have to start somewhere and this class is just the ticket! In this class, you will learn the basics of video production, script writing, storyboard production, audio and camera techniques, interview techniques, editing (including titling, and music) and porting to final product.<\/p>\n<p>You will need a digital video camera for this class or access to one and couple of tapes or other media for recording your production. Students will work with a partner on a project of their own choosing (within limits). We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll spend the first week learning the basic techniques and the second week we will focus on the editing and porting to a DVD. Then we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll put on a show for the school on Monday, May 16 during lunch in the MPR. Come join us for the fun!\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Fee: $5<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Jennifer W -\u00c2\u00a0Altered Books <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>An altered book is a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mixed_media\">mixed media<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Work_of_art\">artwork<\/a> that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and\/or meaning.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll take two books each (old or recycled ) and cut, tear, glue, fold, paint, add to, create <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collage\">collages<\/a>, rebind, add <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gold_leaf\">gold-leafs<\/a>, create pop-ups, use rubber-stamp and\/or digital stamps, drill, bolt, and\/or be-ribbon it. We may add pockets and niches to hold tags, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_(geology)\">rocks<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ephemera\">ephemera<\/a>, or other three-dimensional objects. We may change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of our finished pieces of art. The first book will have a class-wide theme and the second book will be a theme of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>Required: Bring two used or recycled books of at least 150 pages that are bound by sewing and not bound by gluing.\u00c2\u00a0 For materials &#8211; $20<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Alayne &#8211; Peer Taught Yoga with Emily Saul<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Explore a variety of yoga styles and relaxation with Emily Saul, and various teachers from Laughing Lotus yoga, Inner Dance Yoga, and more.\u00c2\u00a0 Some topics will be Intro to Yoga and Form, Forrest yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Deep Relaxation, Walking Meditation Hikes, Yoga on the Plateau, and a Vegan Potluck, Yogic Philosophy and more.\u00c2\u00a0 Find out which style resonates best with you.\u00c2\u00a0 All experience levels are welcome, including absolute beginners, the inflexible, and the unbalanced.\u00c2\u00a0 There will be plenty of field trips.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a small fee for this class, which is yet to be determined.\u00c2\u00a0 Students must provide their own yoga mats.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lorna -\u00c2\u00a0 Physics in Volleyball<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Grade:\u00c2\u00a0 7-8<\/p>\n<p>Credit:\u00c2\u00a0 Science Credit<\/p>\n<p>Dynamics in Physics studies speed, velocity and acceleration of an object.\u00c2\u00a0 This intensive involves a rigorous activity on the study of\u00c2\u00a0 an object moving in a one dimensional and two dimensional motion.\u00c2\u00a0 They will analyze these motions through graphical interpretation, problem solving, demonstration and set plays in volleyball.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Svetlana &#8211; Advanced Digital Photography Co-instructor \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Spencer Mitchel, recent Steller graduate with the passion for photography.
