{"id":7637,"date":"2011-10-21T15:59:44","date_gmt":"2011-10-21T23:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.stellerschool712.org\/flash\/?p=7637"},"modified":"2011-10-21T15:59:44","modified_gmt":"2011-10-21T23:59:44","slug":"oct-19-2011-steller-parent-group-meeting-notes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stellerschool712.org\/main\/oct-19-2011-steller-parent-group-meeting-notes\/","title":{"rendered":"Oct. 19, 2011 Steller Parent Group Meeting Notes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Steller Band held a mini-concert of four songs for the community and Parent Group just prior to the start of the Parent Group Meeting.\u00c2\u00a0 Band teacher Mr. Toba reported that this is the largest Steller band he has ever directed.<\/p>\n<p>Staff Report (Ashley):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intensives: Proposal to change intensives to end of first and end of second semester.\u00c2\u00a0 This is circulating through the advisory groups and indication are that students are supporting the idea.<\/li>\n<li>***Student led conferences: (Wednesday and Thursday Oct. 26 &amp; 27 from 12:30-7pm).\u00c2\u00a0 Parent should know too that there is early dismissal\/in-service day next Friday Oct. 28.\u00c2\u00a0 Email was sent from some advisors and some online messages.\u00c2\u00a0 Sign up can be done on the ASD website***<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Advisory Board (Rochelle):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good attendance at the last meeting<\/li>\n<li>Much of the discussion was on Root Down and their healthy lunch alternative \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The option is not recommended at this time due to some disorganization such as missing lunches, the produce has not always been organic, growing pains, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 There was also a discussion around how to deliver them.\u00c2\u00a0 Students will work on that issue, perhaps Parent Group can pay for an organizer.\u00c2\u00a0 The business is licensed and up to speed permit-wise.\u00c2\u00a0 This may be considered in December.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Op Group (Ashley\/Dale)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Op Group did not meet last week because of finals.<\/li>\n<li>The week before, they talked about a potential new club called Shift (something about shifting the paradigm) focusing on seminar style discussion of current events and world issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Parent Group Committee Reports<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Auction<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A small group is soliciting businesses for contributions<\/li>\n<li>Computers are set up<\/li>\n<li>Set up for donations \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and they are needed!<\/li>\n<li>Rochelle ready with notices<\/li>\n<li>Advisory groups have chosen basket themes<\/li>\n<li>Need responses to emails to freshmen parents<\/li>\n<li>Upcoming Volunteer days: (on list by Rebecca) &#8211; 11\/8 and 11\/11<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Compostable products presentation by Wendy:<\/p>\n<p>Green Alaska Solutions sells:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Garbage bags, paper plates, cups, cutlery<\/li>\n<li>They deliver (No cost for delivery)<\/li>\n<li>Price list available<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Discussion-Rochelle found plates at Costco that are compostable.\u00c2\u00a0 We might be able buy forks, etc.\u00c2\u00a0 When selling coffee, we are obligated to use Kaladi cups.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Principal Report<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alysha- new staff member (.2 position math teacher) will be here at student lead conferences next week.<\/p>\n<p>Response to Instruction (RTI)- is a testing process in reading and math that helps identify problem areas for students.\u00c2\u00a0 ASD is mandating this program.\u00c2\u00a0 Steller will be sending a leadership team to district for training.\u00c2\u00a0 Dimond and Bartlett are already using this system and its been in with elementary schools already.\u00c2\u00a0 Parent Group will hold a more detailed discussion on this at our next meeting on Nov. 16.<\/p>\n<p>Dale spent two days at the principal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conference (\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfilling the bucket\u00e2\u20ac\u2122- want to encourage students to keep adding to the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbucket of learning\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and encourage students to add to other students\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 buckets).\u00c2\u00a0 Much of the good stuff he learned about at the principal conference, we are already doing at Steller.\u00c2\u00a0 He made contact with Alaska Crossing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Camille Beale, head of Education.\u00c2\u00a0 Their programs take at-risk students into the wilderness.\u00c2\u00a0 Program teaches students to be self-reliant and confident. Looking at a 10 day program where students can get science credit.\u00c2\u00a0 Ratio is 1-3. She may come to the next Parent Group meeting set for 11\/16.\u00c2\u00a0 Yearbook is getting a laptop.\u00c2\u00a0 This will make it more convenient for expediting the work.<\/p>\n<p>WORKKEYS- This is a free test scheduled for 11\/9 (make up the following week on 11\/16).\u00c2\u00a0 Results aligns with scholarship for the Alaska Performance Scholarship.\u00c2\u00a0 It is mandatory for all 11<sup>th<\/sup> graders to take the test. Seniors can take it again for free if they would like.\u00c2\u00a0 Students receive a star from bronze to platinum, and can attach to resume.\u00c2\u00a0 Employers are looking at these also.<\/p>\n<p>We got more chemistry books are in today.\u00c2\u00a0 Parent Group members offered to do any lobbying necessary to get this type of book problem resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Dale reported that he is working on the Student Achievement Plan (SAP) and Parent Involvement Plan (PIP). He needs parent input especially to help putt together the PIP. \u00c2\u00a0 Janice and Jennifer offer to help.\u00c2\u00a0 The deadline is October 31.\u00c2\u00a0 The three key goals for the SAP are:<\/p>\n<p>1) Writing goal \u00e2\u20ac\u201cwriting across the curriculum (a focus all classes, not just writing\/English classes)<\/p>\n<p>2) Academic goal (working with students who are not making the grade, making a plan for success and follow through, a parent school and student action part)<\/p>\n<p>3) Have more inclusive activities in advisory groups and student leadership there<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drug and Alcohol Use &#8211; Clarification of Consequences &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Parent Group heard from Dale on this subject.\u00c2\u00a0 Next week is Red Ribbon Week.\u00c2\u00a0 The ASD rules are very clear &#8211; possession or being under the influence or sales\u00c2\u00a0 &#8211; any infraction will result in automatic suspension.\u00c2\u00a0 Sales will results in expulsion.\u00c2\u00a0 Schools are a drug free zone and dealing in a zone is a felony.<\/p>\n<p>Way forward: parent, student, and staff discussions about what pathways there are for our community to raise attention positively<\/p>\n<p><strong>Business<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Request for funding:<\/p>\n<p>Pick click and give \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Rebecca will check with PFD to see if they can join into that Parent Group stated its support.<\/p>\n<p>Support for John to go to Professional Alaska school counselor conference at a cost of $285.\u00c2\u00a0 A motion of support passed unanimously.<\/p>\n<p>Parent Group passed a unanimous resolution: We support the purchase of biodegradable food service materials when at all possible, even if cost is higher, providing that we have the means to pay for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Topics for next months small group discussion:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recruitment<\/p>\n<p>Facilities<\/p>\n<p>Strategic plan<\/p>\n<p>Facility bldg improvement<\/p>\n<p>After school offerings<\/p>\n<p>Retention \/ recruitment subject<\/p>\n<p>Dena, a principal intern here, is also working with North Star Elementary across the street, looking for more Steller students to support our reading tutor program with them.\u00c2\u00a0 We could have some student come here also for a read-in\/story time in the afternoons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Steller Band held a mini-concert of four songs for the community and Parent Group just prior to the start of the Parent Group Meeting.\u00c2\u00a0 Band teacher Mr. Toba reported that this is the largest Steller band he has ever directed.
