Proposal to implement Self-Directed Learning Opportunities<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Middle School<\/strong>: Intro to SDL and the special project requirement for middle school will no longer be a requirement. To replace the curriculum in these two classes, staff will focus on project-based learning to integrate the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153SDL\u00e2\u20ac\u009d skills into the core curriculum. These skills are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Setting Goals and a timeline for completion<\/li>\n
  2. Identifying and gathering resources<\/li>\n
  3. Time management<\/li>\n
  4. Organization<\/li>\n
  5. Self assessment and reflection<\/li>\n
  6. Stand and deliver via presentation<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A middle school Passage class\u00c2\u00a0 will be offered as an elective option within the schedule.<\/p>\n

    High School:<\/strong> Implement the Passages program as a graduation requirement.<\/p>\n

    Requirements<\/strong>: If implemented, students will be required to complete at least 3 passages in at least two different categories. One passage must be service based. One semester may be petitioned for core credit.<\/p>\n

    Benefits:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Gets rid of all outdated language that we use to refer to SDL and other self-directed opportunities.<\/li>\n
    2. Brings Steller\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unique educational opportunities under existing zangle titles without compromising our curriculum.<\/li>\n
    3. Makes middle school scheduling easier.<\/li>\n
    4. Supports Steller\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s philosophy of self-directed learning<\/li>\n
    5. Supports the strategic plan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153get it, own it, pass it on\u00e2\u20ac\u009d motto.<\/li>\n
    6. Meets the request of the parent group for a talking point for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153where the rubber meets the road\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/li>\n
    7. Allows students to pursue passions without being confined to core content areas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Language to Clarify:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Self-Directed Learning (SDL): <\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0This language will no longer be used when referring to a specific course but will be used as a descriptor for one of the main tenets of Steller\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s program.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Independent Study<\/strong>: A course that a student may take to earn core credit. This class is teacher designed.<\/p>\n

      \u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Special projects\/topics:<\/strong> A course that may be offered within the schedule that a student may take for core credit. This class is student designed and requires approval of a teacher.<\/p>\n

      \u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Middle School Passage : <\/strong>An elective course that will let students pursue a passion.<\/p>\n

       <\/p>\n

      Passages:<\/strong> This course is offered for elective credit and allows students to pursue a passion and would be a Steller graduation requirement.<\/p>\n

      For students who use other courses to satisfy a Passage requirement (peer teacher, KCC, gifted mentorship, seminar coach, etc.), Passages will be used as an in-house title on the credit count sheet. See example.<\/p>\n

      One semester of the Passages requirement may be petitioned for core credit.<\/p>\n
