Battle of the Books

Battle of the books is alive and well at Steller. The latest titles and summaries are available at

Look for the middle school and High school lists.

You can also find summaries in the library.  I would encourage you to get together with friends, form a team and begin reading.  District battles will be in late January, early February.  Steller has had a solid showing in the past, let’s keep up the tradition.

BBQ & All Community Meeting Agenda

Thursday, August 26

5:00-5:45—BBQ with burgers, hot dogs, potluck side dishes (hopefully outdoors). Everyone eats and socializes.

6:00 ish—Everyone moves inside, grabs dessert, and makes their way to Advisory Groups to meet their Advisors, and other parents in their group.  Advisors can recruit Parent Liaisons, talk about nature of AGs if they wish.

6:15—Everyone moves to the MPR for the All Community Meeting. We’ll have tables set up for Directory, Flash, eScrip, and Volunteer sign-ups.

6:30—Meeting called to order.

BBQs and All Community Meeting

. . .and the celebrated Order of the Tongs is awarded to all the parents who volunteered their time and energy to help with the Student Orientation Lunch at Steller last Thursday.  Ken & Jennifer were wowed by the parent response, and the students were well-fed after a morning of Advisory Group challenges.  Your talents and assistance were most appreciated . . .

And now, the Steller Parent Group is seeking volunteers of the same ilk to help with the All-Community BBQ & Meeting, this Thursday evening, August 26, from 5:00-7:30 pm.  We will be providing hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks to our Steller Community.  Everyone attending will bring a side dish or dessert.  We need volunteers to help in the following times and areas:

Set Up – 4 to 5 PM–tables, chairs, (indoor or out), garbage cans & bags

Grill-Meisters – 4:30 to 5:30 PM ish—grilling hotdogs and burgers and veggie burgers starting promptly @ 4:30 PM to get ahead of the hungry masses

Tables  – 4:30 to 6 PM ish—set-up, cleaning and re-organizing as we go and helping people get their side dishes they bring set out in the right places – (side dishes outdoors, desserts in the student lounge)

Runners - 5:30 to 6 PM ish—water and lemonade mix, supplies from the Steller kitchen, help with spills, etc.  We need two 5 gal drink coolers.

Clean Up – 6: to 6:30 PM –We need to identify a counseling group that will volunteer to help with this task as well.

Eggs Recalled

LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE: 1 – People in Alaska have reported salmonella poisoning.

WHAT PRODUCT: Raw Eggs
Eggs are packaged under the following brand names: Albertsons, Farm Fresh, James Farms, Glenview, Mountain Dairy, Ralphs, Boomsma, Lund, Pacific Coast., Lucerne, Mountain Dairy, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Dutch Farms and Kemps. Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, and loose eggs for institutional use and repackaging) with Julian dates ranging from 136 to 229 and plant numbers 1720 and 1942.

Dates and codes can be found stamped on the end of the egg carton or printed on the case label. The plant number begins with the letter P and then the number. The Julian date follows the plant number, for example: P-1720 223.

WHY: Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis or arthritis.

FBA INVOLVEMENT: Many local grocery retailers donate to FBA and may have donated some of the above product. In addition, individual donors may have donated to your organization. FBA does not currently have any eggs in its inventory.

DISPOSAL INSTRUCTIONS: If purchased return product to your local retailer for a refund. Otherwise, break the eggs and seal in a suitable container for disposal in a public landfill.

Free Discount Prescription Drug Card from National Association of School Nurses

In July, NASN launched a new program for school nurses to provide free discount prescription drug cards.  Recipients do not need to be citizens or prove eligibility.  See below for participating pharmacies and the information I received regarding the program.  Please email me with the names of those you want enrolled (williams_wendy@asdk12.org) and I will reply back with your card(s).  Please note, each card is person specific, so if you want one for every member of your family, I will need to send you one for each person.

Free Discount Prescription Drug Card
As a school nurse, you know how expensive medications can be, particularly if you, your co-workers, your students or their families are un-insured or under insured.  This program is being provided to you to help lower their prescription drug costs. Camp Erin for Grieving Children and Teens

The 2nd annual Camp Erin Anchorage, a no-charge camp for grieving children and teens, is accepting camper applications for the camp weekend which will be held Friday, September 24- Sunday, September 26, 2010, at Camp Carlquist in Chugiak.  Hospice of Anchorage’s Forget Me Not Grief Program is offering the camp in partnership with The Moyer Foundation.  The Moyer Foundation partners with healthcare and bereavement organizations in local communities to help fund, develop and grow Camp Erin nationwide.

Camp Erin is designed for children and teens ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of someone close to them.  It is a weekend-long experience filled with traditional fun camp activities combined with grief education and emotional support- led by grief professionals and trained volunteers.  Camp Erin provides a unique opportunity for peer bonding between children and teens facing a similar life circumstance.

Students Needed

We have 15 open slots.  If anyone knows a kid that is self-motivated, works well with others, and is an independent learner, refer them to us.

It does not make a difference what grade they are in as long as they are willing to work on their own behalf.

ASD MENTORSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Mentorship Program is designed for juniors and seniors who are seeking an additional academic challenge. This program offers a great opportunity to try a career in a professional environment before investing the time and money in higher education.  The mentorship program also looks great on transcripts and resumes, as well as providing a professional reference.

Students can qualify for the program based their GPA, standardized test scores, teacher recommendations, outstanding leadership, motivation, or community service experience.  Please visit the school district’s website for more information at www.asdk12.org/projects/gifted

BBQ Volunteers Needed

We’re still in need of parent volunteers for the Orientation BBQ this Thursday from 10:45 to 1:00. If you can spare the time, we could really use your help grilling, setting up, and cleaning up. The ninth-graders will also be helping with the meal. So far, we have four parents who have committed to help and it would be great if we could get four more.
