New To Steller Orientation Was A HOMERUN!!

We hit it out of the park with 149 participants this year!  If you missed it, read below and we will try to help you catch up and feel ‘in the game’.

We covered all the bases:

  •  “Nuts and Bolts” of Steller from Rebecca Johnson; Click here for the webpage.
  •  The Steller process- Student artistically presented how an Idea Becomes Reality
  •  Became familiar with other new families and experienced parents and students in their student’s advisory and some staff
  •  Steller lingo (here)
  •  Ways parents can engage in activities already happening at Steller, or think of new ways that better fit their gifts.  More info here.

Thanks to ALL who attended.  Special appreciation goes to parents and students who helped with the planning and day of event activities:  Rochelle, Lorryn, Eliza, Meg, Seth, Chad, Darwin, Jordan, Rebecca, Rebecca, Mark, Cathy, Ellen, Jennifer, Emily, Brian, Tziporah, Michelle, Hayleigh, Mike, Dale, Pat, Victoria, Glen, Corbin, Wendy, Alyse

Because of her dedication, many Steller students are better connected to opportunities to share their time and talent in the community.

ASD Mentorship Program

ASD Mentorship Program – Now accepting applications for 2012-13 school year!

The Gifted Mentorship program is for the exceptional 11th and 12th grade high school student who has the self-discipline and interest to pursue independent study under the direction of a professional/ expert in a field of great interest to the student.

The program gives motivated, mature high school students an idea of what it is like to work in a field of their interest by being teamed with a professional who acts as their mentor during a 45 hour program. Meeting times are arranged when it works best for the mentor and the student: usually after school and on in-service days. Students receive an .50 elective credit for the mentorship when they successfully complete a range of requirements. The student transcript will read: Adv Mentorship/Field (e.g. Engineering), which looks great on a resume and/or a transcript!

Please contact Jean Poulsen poulsen_jean@asdk12.org or visit our website:
http://www.asdk12.org/projects/gifted/

Application Deadline is September 21, 2012!
Jean is at Steller every Tuesday during lunch – in the library!

Help Still Needed!!

Our Back to School BBQ is this Wednesday evening, 5:30-7:00 pm.  We are looking forward to a big crowd (and maybe some good weather?) and we still need a LOT more help.  We especially need people who can come early to start cooking and to set up.  Please see the volunteer slots below and email me @ beckinak@gmail.com ASAP if you might be able to fill one.

Set Up – 4:30 to 5:30 PM–tables, chairs, (indoor or out), garbage cans & bags, prepping food items in the kitchen and setting food out on the tables.

Grill-Meisters – 4:30 to 7:00 PM ish—grilling hotdogs and burgers starting promptly @ 5:00 PM to get ahead of the hungry masses.  We could also use later shifts.

Table Monitors  – 5:30 to 7:00 PM ish—set-up, cleaning and re-organizing as we go and helping people get their side dishes set out in the right places, removing dishes that are empty, etc.

Runners - 5:30 to 7:00 PM ish—water and lemonade mix, supplies from the Steller kitchen, help with spills, etc.

Clean Up – 7: 00 to 7:30 PM

Thank you!!
