2011 High School Summer Internship Program

Senator Murkowski is now accepting applications for her 2011 High School Summer Internship Program. The High School Intern Program is an opportunity for young people to learn about the United States Senate and the political process and to gain experience working in a professional office.

Alaskan students who will graduate from high school this spring are eligible to apply.  The deadline to submit an application isMarch 11, 2011.  Successful applicants will be well-rounded individuals who are able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and who are willing to work hard and have fun.

Interns will:

· Assist the Senator and her staff in serving Alaskans;

·
Assist with day-to-day clerical and administrative tasks;

·
Perform research and assist in drafting legislation;

·
Shadow the Senator through a full legislative day;

·
Experience first-hand how the legislative process works in the United States Senate; and

·
Have the opportunity enjoy the many educational and cultural activities that are available in the Washington D.C. area.

Advisory Group Announcements: 10 January 2011

Seniors:  Tomorrow there will be a working lunch meeting.  We will have pizza and meet with the rep from Jostens about ordering graduation announcements.  We’ll also discuss Prom, graduation order, senior will, sweatshirt orders, and a possible skit at the Talent Show.  Please be sure to come at 11:45 on the dot! Philip is traveling next year and will be presenting and brainstorming  opportunities for travel tomorrow. At the meeting we will be  looking for input on where students would like to go. If you are thinking about traveling in March next year swing by Philip’s room at noon on Tuesday for our first informational meeting.

The Young Environmental Photographer of the Year competition is divided into two groups, one open to anyone under the age of 16 and the other open to those aged between 16 and 21. Photographers are encouraged to highlight issues important to their generation, explore their place in society or celebrate people, places and animals that they value. This competition actively encourages entries from beginners, as well as photography students.   Details and Deadlines are available on The Flash.

Model United Nations
Ever wanted to represent the interests of your country on the world stage. The Alaska Model United Nations provides that opportunity and Steller has a long history of participation in this state-wide event. If you are interested in debate and learning more about international issues, please attend a meeting today (Monday) at noon in Ken’s room. You’ll get all the information about dates, fees, and activities.  See you there.

Gay-Straight Alliance
Interested in promoting good relations among all student groups? We are currently in the process of reviving the GSA and we need students’ support. If you are interested, please attend an informational meeting this Wednesday at noon in Ken’s room.

February Creative Commons:

On Friday, February 25th, we will be celebrating the love of words, images, music, and dance with the second Creative Commons.  The  theme is poetry.  We will be hosting a poetry slam, reveling in the dedicated spoken word from the Poetry Out-Loud finalists, enjoying poetry to music, and viewing visual arts in conjunction with poems or written word.

Anybody wishing to perform should prepare for preliminary auditions on February 1st and 2nd after school.

Visual artists and poets are encouraged to work together to create words and images, which fit together.  For example, a painting which interprets a poem, a poem which interprets a painting, or a poem and a painting which were designed together to express one theme.  (You could be both the visual artist and the poet.)  Artwork will be collected on February 15th and must have a completed entry form attached.

Other works and performances, which do not pertain to the poetry theme will also be accepted.

MATHCOUNTS

MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program with four levels of competition-school, chapter (local), state and national. Consisting of fun and creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, the MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components. MATHCOUNTS Club opens to 7th and 8th grade and will meet twice a week at noon in Shanley/DanLu’s room. If you are interested, please sign up with your advisor and come to the meeting at noon on Tuesday, Jan 11.

Photography Competition

Organized by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), the Environmental Photographer of the Year is an international showcase for the very best in amateur and professional environmental photography, and is one of the fastest growing photographic competitions in the world – receiving 4,500 entries from photographers in 97 countries in 2010.

As part of the Environmental Photographer of the Year, the Young Environmental Photographer of the Year categories promote the talents of anyone under the age of 21, whilst the remaining categories are open to photographers of all ages.

The Young Environmental Photographer of the Year is divided into two groups, one open to anyone under the age of 16 and the other open to those aged between 16 and 21. Photographers are encouraged to highlight issues important to their generation, explore their place in society or celebrate people, places and animals that they value. This competition actively encourages entries from beginners, as well as photography students.

The competition is completely free to enter and encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, original and beautiful. The winning photographs come together to form the most outstanding collection of environmental, social and natural photographs in the world. Individual pieces are judged on impact, creativity, composition, originality and technical abilities. Winners receive cash prizes and all winning entries are displayed in the Environmental Photographer of the Year exhibition, launched in London. Copyright is retained by the photographer.

The competition will run until 31st July 2011, with judging taking place throughout August and September.

Students are encouraged to enter via www.epoty.org.  This is for professional and amateur photographers, so they actively encourage those with a general interest in the environment to enter as well. The competition is open until 5pm on 31st July 2011.

The 2011 Alternative Fair will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the ASD Education Center, 5530 E. Northern Lights. Blvd. (Boniface and Northern Lights).

We would love to have one parent and one student volunteer for each of the time slots listed below:

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (Ret.) has founded iCivics.org, a fun, effective, and FREE web-based education project to teach students civics and inspire them to be active participants in our democracy.  Alaska’s Chief Justice Walter L. Carpeneti, state chair for iCivics, invites Alaskan educators to learn how to use the website’s webquests, games, and lessons at a FREE Webinar on Thursday, January 27, 2011, or Tuesday, February 1, 2011.

“JUSTICE FOR ALL” ART CONTEST

Students of all grade levels are invited to submit works in any medium that address the themes of FAIRNESS, DIVERSITY & EQUALITY in our justice system.

SUPREME COURT LIVE

The Alaska Supreme Court will hear oral argument in actual cases before a student audience at West High School in Anchorage onThursday, February 24, 2011.

Anchorage high school teachers are invited to sign up by Friday, January 14, 2011, to bring their classes to the event, and teachers outside the Anchorage area are invited to follow the cases online and view a delayed broadcast of the proceedings.

COLOR OF JUSTICE

The 9th Annual Statewide Color of Justice program will be held Wednesday-Friday, June 22-24, 2011, at the University of Alaska Anchorage and the Anchorage courthouses.  The free program, founded by the National Association of Women Judges, seeks to foster diversity in the legal profession and judiciary by encouraging young women and youth of color to pursue careers as judges.  Open to all Alaskan high school and college students interested in legal careers.
