Peace Garden Harvest

A handful of Stellerites have been busy gardening this summer, and we are planning to harvest our crops this Sunday. We will meet at the garden at 12 noon, ready to get dirty. Anyone interested in the Steller Ecological Society garden Club is welcome to join us. Family members are welcome and encouraged.

Despite the rains of July, the Peace Garden has thrived this summer, and the flowers are at their peak. If you haven’t seen the garden, take a peek at the south end of the parking lot. We’ve grown over 25 different kinds of herbs and vegetables, and a rainbow of flowers.

You may have seen us at the Spenard Farmer’s Market, where we have sold our veggie starts and produce. We’ve purchased 4 fruit trees with our profits. We can use extra help digging holes and planting these new trees into the ground.

Community/school gardening is great because we all share the workload and it seems more like fun because we do it together.

We invite you to join us Sunday, September 12 at 12 noon in the garden!

Spring Intensive Trip

We are forming a trip during the Spring Intensive to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland.

Here is what we are planning:

1. We will fly to Medford, Oregon and shuttle to Southern Oregon University where we will stay on the university campus in the conference center and dorms. All meals can be provided at the university site, if we wish. We will be staying on the Southern Oregon University campus during our entire stay.

2. While on campus, we will attend a minimum of 4 one-hour workshops such as Elizabethan Music, Theater Make-up, Stage Combat, and so on

(link:  http://www.sou.edu/housing/conference/conferprogs.html ). Choices to be chosen by the student group. This promises to be a lot of fun!

3. At the Festival itself, we can have a backstage tour, pre and post discussions with a cast member, and other goodies.

(link:  http://www.orshakes.org/plays/groups/education.aspx ). We will discuss and choose these, too.

4. Here’s a map of the theaters (3 total):

http://www.osfashland.org/_dwn/plays/OSF_campus_map_7-08.pdf

(This takes a while to load and may appear to be just a little blob but if you click on it, it all comes up)

5. There are usually about 8 plays to choose from. Schedules for Spring 2011 plays haven’t been posted as yet. They will put on their first outdoor musical in the Elizabethan Theater (Pirates of Penzanse). “To Kill a Mockingbird and others will be staged.

Our daily schedule will be decided in the future but we will definitely attend a workshop and a play every day. Final costs will depend on the number of students (min. 15-max. 20), the number of workshops, the number of pre and post play events, any added events that we may choose, and ground transportation. But at this time, a rough estimate would be $1700. This estimate is figuring in a round trip ticket to Medford, room and board, workshop fees, and the best seats in the house every day!

Come join us! If you are interested in this exciting trip, please come to our first meeting on Friday, Sep. 17th at noon in Jennifer’s room to hear more!

“Kitchen Kleanup”

A giant BBQ thank-you to all the volunteers who helped to set up, grill, straighten, and clean up at the Steller Back to School BBQ on August 26.  Thanks also, to all who attended, and to those who brought a pot luck dish. The food was wonderful—the community participation phenomenal.

As mentioned at the All Community Meeting that night, we are planning a “Kitchen Kleanup” & Purge on Saturday, September 11, beginning at 10:00 am.  We are looking for several parent volunteers to help sort through, the old contents of the kitchen cupboards.  Everything was boxed up for storage over the summer for the kitchen renovation.  We need to clean, sort, and inventory what is in working order, or usable condition, and discard the rest.

I’ll bring doughnuts, and if we come across a working coffeepot during the purge, we’ll have coffee also.  Hope to see you at Steller on Saturday.

Parents of Art Students!

If your student has an art class this quarter, please be sure to pay the $10 Lab Fee. Correct change and/or a check (to Steller) is always appreciated! The Art teacher will be collecting this fee this week and next week. Art classes are self-supporting – there is very little district funding for the department.
Thanks!

Rotary Loussac Library Project

If you haven’t heard the exciting news, Loussac Library is in the process of planning a teen area slated to open next summer (thanks to the Anchorage Rotary)!! But we can’t and don’t want to do it without your input. Please click on the link below and take our short survey on how you currently use the library and what you’d like to see in a teen area. Then send the link to your friends for their input. We’re looking for a really good sample of the likes, dislikes, wants, and needs of teens with regards to their library use; so help us get the word out. Let me know if you have any questions about the survey. It’s set up so that your answers are completely anonymous. The Library’s Teen Advisory Board will pick the winning name (see survey question #9).
