Thank-you 9th grade class and Parent Volunteers

Many thanks to all the 9th graders and Parent Volunteers who helped in planning, organizing, setting-up, running, and cleaning up after the annual Steller Auction.  You helped to earn over $10,000 for Steller technology, travel, and yearbook funds.  (We don’t yet have a final tally, as monies are still coming in.)  Thanks also to the many Steller families who donated or solicited donations for auction items, and those who contributed supplies, food, and decorations.  As always, thanks to all the Advisory Groups for assembling the wonderfully varied, and valuable, AG Baskets—we couldn’t do it without you. We appreciate everyone who came, shopped, and purchased.  A note of awe and appreciation to the 9th graders who lent their talents to provide the auction entertainment, create the program art, and supply technical production assistance.  A special thanks to TBA’s Wayne Mitchell for acting as Auctioneer and MC

Ad Board meets Thursday, April 22 at 6:00 in Ken’s room.

Last month, Ad Board voted to approve a proposal for offering academic/community service credit to students participating in Op Group & Ad Board.  This credit should be in place for the 2010-11 school year.  They also approved the distribution of a student survey regarding Advisory Groups. This month, the Board’s agenda includes a vote to officially adopt the revised travel policy submitted last year by Staff, and continued work on the AG notebooks.  If you have additional agenda items, please forward same to Ad Board co-chairs, Elizabeth leza@gci.net or Lorryn colliegirl@gci.net .

Steller Student Directory

Student Directories were distributed in Advisory Groups last week. Remind your student to bring home your family’s copy.  We appreciate the effort of parent volunteers: Sally Jungreis for collecting the information;  Wendy Woolf for transferring the info to a new format database which will make it much quicker and easier to publish the directory next year; and Marc Wilhlem for printing the directory.

Parent Group meets this Thursday, April 15 at 7:00 in Ken’s room.

As a community, we’ve been discussing what we would like to see as part of the Advisory Group experience.  We would like to have the same discussion regarding Parent Group.  What do parents expect from the group? Why do they, or do they not participate?  What do parents, as a group, see as their function in the Steller Community? What role do you see Parent Group fulfilling—should we only hold the purse strings?  Organize the volunteers?  Or, is our purpose just to make waves? Please come with a list of three things you would like from Parent Group—or email same to Rochelle Wilhelm colliebarks@aol.com If you are unable to attend Thursday’s meeting to participate in the discussion you can also post your comments here.

Auction wrap-up; meeting calendar for next year; recruiting parent volunteers; and parent liaison job descriptions are also on the agenda.

Changing the Future…A conversation about teen pregnancy and access to healthcare services

“Changing the Future…A conversation about teen pregnancy and access to healthcare services”  is happening on May 1st from 1-3 pm.   It is open to teens 14-18 (although if there is a teen who you know would do a fantastic job contributing, and they are slightly older, they are also encouraged to attend.)

The 2 hour meeting will consist in breaking the teens up into groups of 4-5, giving them discussion topics, paper and pens, and having them converse among themselves- and draw/write it all down. They will then all come back together and discuss what they talked about.  It will be a good chance for them to meet other Anchorage teens. There will of course be time set aside for games and food!

The information gained will be used to help provide better programs for teens.

All participating teens will be given a $20 gift card.

Teens who are usually not represented and do not have a chance to have their voice heard are especially encouraged to attend.

If you know parenting teens, please let them know that childcare expenses will be reimbursed.

SPRING CLEANING TIME!!

Overdue notices went to 25 students today.  Ask your student if they got
one. Look in backpacks, on bookshelves and under the beds….also try
cleaning out the car!

There is a $25 fine for a lost book, or you may replace the book with
another copy from the bookstore…usually cheaper.

All library books should be returned before intensives.  April 29 is the
final due date.
The library will be open during intensives, but no books will be checked
out.

Thanks for helping me find these wandering books.
