Planned Parenthood will present on human anatomy & physiology, healthy relationships, teen sexuality issues, and have a condom demonstration. This year we are fortunate to receive a presentation from STAR regarding sexual assault and prevention.

We feel it is very important that every sophomore attend this event. Parent permission is required to attend this workshop. The students will be excused from their regular classes, if they attend the full day workshop.

Lunch will not be provided. Students will be expected to bring a “brown bag lunch,” and will not be permitted to leave for lunch due to time constraints on the speaker schedule. Advisory Board Meeting

ADVISORY BOARD meets with Op Group Thursday, April 23 at 12:00 in Danielle’s room.  Agenda items include: report from Parent Group; report on Op Group proposal regarding class fundraising; report from Travel committee regarding changes in Travel policy; parent request for homework assignments to be posted on line—how might Zangle make this possible; Please send additional agenda items to P. Parent Meeting

PARENT GROUP meets Wednesday, April 22 at 5:30 in Ken’s room.  This is our next to last meeting of the year, and we have many decisions to make—not the least of which is the future of Parent Group itself.  Some questions for discussion:
When should we meet?
Who will be in charge?
What should Parent Liaisons do?
Who will be on Ad Board?
What should we do with all that money?
What is Op Group up to?
What about those changes in fundraising and travel policy?
Who will do all those Parent Volunteer jobs next year?  What are those Parent Volunteer jobs anyway?
Whatever happened to that cafe thing?

Steller Music Performance

“STELLAR” MUSIC—will be performed this coming Friday, April 24 in the Steller MPR.  Troy has been working with students enrolled in the Music Module on Wednesdays, and seniors-in-passage, to arrange a benefit concert for Steller Art & Science supplies.  Groups appearing include:  One Blue Wall, Angelys, CTP, Water Lily & Moonshine, and the Steller Choir, as well as members of the Spoken Word Module.  Tickets will be $5 for students and $10 for general admission; available in advance or at the door.  (It is a fundraiser after all.)  Please attend on Friday to support these student performers, and benefit Steller Arts & Sciences at the same time.

Citywide Clean-up

The Citywide Cleanup “Super Sweeper” Program on May 2 is a great way to teach kids the importance of not littering and it’s also a lot of fun. Jointly coordinated by the Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, the Super Sweeper Program challenges elementary, middle, private and high schools to get together to clean trash around their school and in their neighborhood.

Calling all Steller students! Families are welcome to join our student volunteers to clean up Anchorage neighborhoods. Pick up your orange bags at Steller Secondary on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Steller students will be entered to win an IPOD Shuffle!

On going: We now are in the process of hiring for 3.5 positions.  We are currently interviewing Social Studies applicants.  We have J. Banta, K. Varee, J. Krimp, J. Steele and myself on that committee.  We will also be interviewing for a full time counselor, a Science/Chemistry person and a half time Drama person.  I have the students and parents lined up for these interviews and we are hoping to get quality personnel.    Normally the number of questions on any interview does not exceed 10-15 questions, usually the former.  However, there are 35 questions for the SS position,  25 for the counselor, science and drama.

4/22/09: Two orchestra students, Liz Tix and Laura Jungreis, will play their cello duet for the parent meeting.

Free CPR Training

With the new approach to learning CPR, people with no healthcare background can learn how to save a life in 40 minutes!

Alaska Regional Hospital, Anchorage Fire Department Loren Marshall Foundation, and UAA Fire and Emergency Services Program have planned a MASS CPR Training for the citizens of Anchorage on Saturday, April 25th to get as many folks in our community trained as possible – their goal is 300 people in one day!

They will be teaching CPR Anytime every hour, on the hour from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the UAA Commons off of Elmore St.  This class provides citizens with the basics of CPR.  Additional training would be required at a later date to receive a certification card.

Please consider challenging your family, your bowling team, or maybe your church group to meet and learn CPR together. Brochures attached with more info and directions.

There is no cost and no pre-registration needed.

Everyone trained will also go home with an instructional kit including a DVD to share.

If you plan to run/walk the Heart Run you can also plan to stop by when you are finished.  They are right down the street!
