UAA Class offered at West!

English 111  Methods of Written Communication
(this is the basic Freshmen English class)
2:30 to 3:45 Mondays and Wednesdays
Students sign up through UAA at the University Center
3 credits (3 x $141 = $423)

Minimum prerequisites: (one of these)
SAT:  V 530
ACT:  C 22
Accuplacer:  Reading comprehension 85
Accuplacer:  Sentence 95

Complete a credit by choice form and sign up with UAA.
This is not a weighted class; it will count as a .5 English elective.

ENGL A111 Methods of Written Communication 3 CR
Contact Hours: 30 class meetings
Instruction in composition of expository essays with emphasis on different techniques for organization and development. Documented paper required. Readings in some sections may be coordinated with another discipline.

Scholarship Opportunity

Delta Sigma Theta Alaska Alumnae Chapter Scholarship for 2009 High School Graduating Seniors

Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, personal essay, honors and activities, letters of recommendation and financial need. The award will not exceed $1000.00. Payment will be made directly to the post secondary academic institution upon verification of enrollment. Application materials will not be returned. The winners and their respective career counselors will be notified no later than April 15, 2009.

Latin Dance

As part of R.E.C.E.S.S.  ADT Dance Co.  is offering a Latin dance class.  The total cost is $100 which will be split between the participants.  If we have  20 people sign up the cost per person is $5.  The classes are flexible, meaning that they can teach any dance style.  If we have a large number of interested students we can offer a second class.  The Latin one is an hour long  and we could have another class right after.  The minimum number of people per class is 10.

STUDY ABROAD

GOVERNMENT FUNDED STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS!!

Scholarships are now available for American students wishing to travel abroad and study languages that are critical to the nation, including Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, Russian, and Turkish. Students have the option of three different program lengths: a summer intensive, a semester, or a full academic year. Interested students must: (1) be U.S. citizens, (2) be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program, and (3) be enrolled in high school with at least a 2.5 grade point average. Students may travel abroad during high school or during a “gap year.” Applications must be submitted by February 2, 2009. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE GO TO:  www.nsliforyouth.org.

Q: What does the scholarship offer?
A: Full tuition in a study abroad program administered by AFS Intercultural Programs, American Councils, iEARN-USA, or another leading exchange
institution.

  • In-country language, culture, and current events classes with opportunities to apply acquired skills and knowledge
  • In-country field trips with local guides
  • Live in-country with a host family or boarding school
  • Re-entry orientation
  • Join the 550-member alumni association with outreach activities
  • Opportunities for continuing language study, mastery and use

Q: What costs are not covered by the scholarship?
A: Students will need to raise funds to pay for:

  • Passport costs
  • Spending money in the host country

Requirements:
To be considered for an NSLI for Youth program scholarship, you must:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be 15-18 years of age at the start of the program
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required
  • Be enrolled in high school at time of application – gap year study is an option

Type 1 Diabetes Networking Group

The Children’s Hospital at Providence will host a support
and networking group for families and children with Type 1 diabetes on
Wednesday January 14th 2009 from 6-7:30pm in the Aspen Room downstairs
near the cafeteria in the main hospital. The guest speaker with be Nurse
Practitioner Linda Lau.
