Win An iPod Shuffle

The Steller Community is enrolled in a very simple, yet powerful, fundraising program called eScrip.  Together with hundreds of merchant partners, eScrip has created a system that rewards customer loyalty by contributing a percentage of purchases to support your chosen groups. It’s simple and painless and only requires supporters to register once. You can designate up to three non-profit groups to receive your support, and change your designated beneficiaries at any time.  You simply register your Carr’s/Safeway club card and/or credit/debit card with eScrip, then shop as you normally do.  Local merchants participating in the program are: Safeway and OfficeMax.

Hundreds of other merchants are accessible through the eScrip online shopping mall—everything from Apple to Zales, Barnes & Noble to Nordstrom, even EBay can be reached through eScrip and earn dollars for Steller—you just have to link through the eScrip website first.  OR you can download the eScrip Autotrack feature, and anytime you shop at a participating online merchant, you’ll see a popup window telling you how much Steller will earn from your purchase.  To register, or for more information, click on the link on the Steller parent website, or go to www.eScrip.com.  You do need your actual Carr’s/Safeway account # to register.  If you’re like me, and usually just key in your phone number when shopping at Carr’s, you can call Safeway at 1-877-723-3929 to verify your card number.

In an effort to encourage more Steller families to sign up for eScrip, we planned to hold a drawing for three ipod Shuffles at the November All Community Meeting.  Since that meeting was postponed, the drawing has also been postponed to the next scheduled meeting in January.  Staff-members have generously allowed their likenesses to be manipulated in support of this program.  For those of you who have missed the posters in the hallway, we will occasionally reproduce them here.

Copies of the registration/entry forms can be found in envelopes outside each classroom. Completed forms should be returned to the blue eScrip box in the office. Students are not limited to immediate family  members for support—grandparents, aunts & uncles, even your piano teacher can be registered as a Steller supporter. eScrip is a nationwide program, so friends and relatives in other states can also register to support Steller.  Each new successful eScrip registration is an entry in the drawing for the named student. The drawing will take place at the next All Community Meeting.  Students need not be present to win.

Letters About Literature 2009

Alaska Center for the Book Launches
“Letters About Literature 2009”

Students in grades 4 through 12 are invited to enter Letters About Literature 2009, a national writing contest sponsored by Alaska Center for the Book and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in partnership with Target Stores. The contest deadline is December 6, 2008.

To enter, students must write a letter to an author – living or dead – explaining how his or her work changed their view of the world or themselves.

The contest has three competition levels: Level I is open to students in grades 4 through 6; Level II is open to students in grades 7-8; and Level III is open to students in grades 9-12.

Each letter must be accompanied by an official entry coupon or copy of one. Entry coupons will be available at your local, participating library or online at the Alaska Center for the Book web site at www.alaskacenterforthebook.org. Guidelines and teaching supplements are also available for teachers, parents, or librarians at the site.

Alaska state winners at each level will receive a $100 cash prize plus a $50 Target gift card (good also at target.com). They also advance to national competition.

Six national winners (two per competition level) and 12 national runners-up (four per competition level) will be selected. Each national winner will receive a $500 Target GiftCard. In addition, they will win a Reading Promotion Grant of $10,000 for their school or community library. The 12 national runners-up will win a $100 Target GiftCard, plus they will win a Reading Promotion Grant of $1,000 for their school or community library.

Statewide judges include: Derick Burleson, poet, Fairbanks; Mary Jo Joiner, director, Kenai Community Library; Ernestine Hayes, author, Juneau; Patty Christensen, librarian, Talkeetna; and others. This is the eleventh year for Letters About Literature here in Alaska.

Ask Barack Obama

If your students had one burning question to ask President-elect Barack Obama, what would it be?

ePals.com http://www.epals.com , an educational social networking site, is offering K-12 students across the nation a chance to get that message across to the next president of the United States. Whether it’s global warming, world peace, or the economy, the Your Presidential Minute http://www.epals.com/elections contest encourages students to think creatively and passionately about the issues that matter most to them-and then to convey that message to Obama in the form of a one-minute audio recording, a one-minute video, a 200-word written submission, or a 10-slide PowerPoint presentation. All submissions should directly address the president-elect.

Students should think “globally and be creative,” such as writing a song, poem, or speech to emphasize their points. ePals will compile the best responses online and share them with the president-elect, his transition team, and members of the ePals Global Community.
Videos, audio files, and other media can be uploaded to Election Central http://community.epals.com/groups/elections/media/default.aspx, and written entries should be submitted to electioncentral@epals.com.

The contest is being offered through ePals’ Election Central http://community.epals.com/groups/elections/default.aspx page, which allows students to discuss their ideas with family, friends, and teachers, as well as their peers around the world through Election Central’s student forums.
