Steller BOOK FAIR at Title Wave Books

November 21-23.

Students, parents, teachers and families come to Title Wave and shop.  At the end of the fair,
Title Wave donates 25% of the proceeds from the sale of the Book Fair to Steller’s Alternative Fund.

The Fund will help pay for next year’s Coalition of Essential School’s conference (to be held in the Fall).  Teachers, a parent, and a student will be attending the conference.  Vouchers were passed out during advisory group to be presented upon purchase.

Monthly Staff Luncheons

The proposal to re-institute Monthly Staff Luncheons was passed in September, first by Parent Group, and then by students in Op Group. The October luncheon was sponsored by Parent Liaisons as a group. We are still seeking that “yet-to-be-named” parent to handle the overall organization. A good deal of the preliminary work is already completed.
Calendar assignments for lunch-dates and Advisory Groups are set:

  • Oct. 29–Bob’s & Frank Toni’s
  • Nov. 26–Danielle’s & Gerald’s
  • Dec. 17–Jean’s & Jennifer’s
  • Jan. 21–Jen’s & Jim’s
  • Feb 18–Ken’s & Michelle’s
  • March 18–Larry’s & Natalie’s
  • April 1–Nina’s & Phillip’s
  • April 29–Troy’s & Shannon’s

The parent in charge of the overall organization of Staff luncheons would:
• Notify Parent Liaisons & Student Reps of their assigned luncheon dates and send reminders at the beginning of each month. You may suggest themes or types of food–or leave the choices entirely up to the groups. Maintain contact as the luncheon date approaches. I see the actual menu planning, decoration, shopping for supplies or paper goods, providing entertainment if desired, as being the designated groups’ responsibilities.
• Be on site the day of the luncheon to direct students/parents where to store food and locate in-house supplies. (Last year I purchased two sets of tablecloths that fit the staff lounge tables specifically for future luncheons. They are stored in the cupboard marked “Parent Group Supplies for Staff Lunch” in the staff lounge. It would be your responsibility to see they were laundered and returned.)
• Make sure the lounge is cleaned up and leftovers properly stored–we purchased some storage containers last year. Staff will make use of leftovers, but hesitate to throw them away–it may be necessary to purge the frig of leftovers the following week.
If Advisory Groups didn’t like the assigned calendar, it would be up to them to negotiate changes with their Parent Liaisons, and keep you informed.

Please contact Rochelle Wilhelm at 562-2558, or colliebarks@aol.com if you are interested in this fulfilling opportunity for a Parent volunteer.

Steller Strategic Planning Meeting Notes 10 28 08

In attendance: Joe Banta, Robin Wohlforth, Gary Steele, Rebecca Burns, Charles Wohlforth, Barbara Wohlforth, Harlod Greene

We met at 5 p.m. to go over the value statements developed at the Oct 1 all community meeting. Charles had compiled the notes from the meeting, gathering the value statements from the five groups by their commonalities, which produced 11 value commonalities and several more statements that had been made by only one group each. (That document is attached at the end.) He began a discussion on the validity of these groupings, which quickly became a deep and broad-ranging philosophical discussion about Steller.

We first took on the value of academics and doing challenging intellectual work. The group felt this should be broken into two values: one about seriousness and purpose (covering all work, not just academics), and the other about intellectual development/work.

Harlod said that, as the new principal, Continue reading

Hand Quilting Intensive

Michelle’s hand-quilting intensive class is in need of donations.  We will graciously accept fabrics (particularly holiday colors), threads, sewing needles, thimbles, and batting.  Also, if anyone has quilting frames or hoops that we could borrow we would greatly appreciate it.

I am trying to keep the cost down for students.

Thanks so much.
Michelle

Legislative Projects Grant

To the Steller Community.  Here is an opportunity for us as “one” community to request special financing for a special project at our school.  We just need to answer a few basic questions.

*   how will the project meet the ASD school District Program Goals
*   what is the benefit of this project
*   estimated number of students that would be impacted by the project

Please see the attached grant form!

Programmatic goals can be found at :

*   http://www.asdk12.org/school_board/goals.asp

You can begin to work on any pet projects you may have been thinking of and bring them to the next all community meeting [November 13, 2008 in the Steller MPR] to discuss.

Below is a timeline for the grant process beginning with me making the grant process available to our community.

I must have your proposals in my hands by 1:00pm on December 1, 2008. At 1:10 I will leave Steller to deliver what proposals I have to the Director of Secondary Education.
