Romeo and Juliet An ongoing feud between the Capulets and the Montagues breaks out again on the streets of Verona. Both sides are warned by Prince Escalus that they must not disturb the peace again, on pain of death. Come see West High’s production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy.

Camp Internet Extreme … June 5-9 & June 12-16
Camp Internet: Extreme, entering its 23rd jaw-dropping year, offers students access to top-of-the-line flat screen iMac computers, 3-D printing capabilities, iPads, a wide variety of cutting edge multimedia equipment, and two certified teachers with 40 plus years of combined technology teaching experience.

2017/2018 Travel Scholarship Deadline – APRIL 11th
Next year there will be two exciting travel trips happening during Intensives. Rosa and Svetlana are traveling in December to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, and Jason and Leigh Anne are traveling in May to Iceland. If you need more information about the Galapagos trip, email Rosa at hohnstein_rosalie@asdk12.org or stop by and talk to her. If you want to find out more about the Iceland trip, there is a parent meeting this Thursday the 30th at 6:00 in Jason’s room, or email Jason at collins_jason@asdk12.org. Scholarship money is available for travel intensives. Students should pick up a form from the office and the deadline to turn them in is April 11th.

Spike Jorgensen Scholarship Reminder – March 28th Deadline
Important Reminder for the 2017 Spike Jorgensen Scholarship
DEADLINE: Tuesday March 28, 2017
Students can receive $1,000 their first year, and can renew the scholarship up to four years – totaling $4,000.
Application is simple!
* One page application
* Short personal essay
* Two letters of recommendation
What makes this scholarship unique?
* It is only open to member districts of the Coalition for Education Equity (formally CEAAC)
* Which means the pool of applicants is historically smaller than for other scholarships
* Scholarships are awarded based personal essay and recommendations – NOT GPA

Spring testing is coming up!
The state of Alaska’s new standards-based assessment is referred to as PEAKS (Performance Evaluation for Alaska’s Schools).
Grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 will be assessed in the areas of Language Arts and Math, and grades 8 and 10 will also be tested in Science.
Steller’s main testing schedule:
Week of April 4th: Grades 7 and 8
April 10th: Science grade 8
Week of April 17th: Grades 9 and 10
April 24th: Science grade 10
Testing will start at 8:30 every day and it is important that students arrive at school on time. The test is untimed.

The Steller staff appreciates student participation and parent support in making PEAKS a successful assessment. We have hired substitute teachers as test administrators to limit the impact on classroom instruction.

Souper Steller News! Soup is on this week and help is needed!
This week Brian’s advisory chose Caribou Chili and Tomato Basil soups along with Corn Bread and fruit.
We would appreciate help Thursday from 2 to 4 PM and Friday anytime between 9 AM and 12:45 PM.
Update for next year- Do we want this tradition to continue? How might we change it? Unfortunately, Alyse is not able to lead Souper Steller next year. So if this is something you’re interested in doing now would be a great time to check in with Alyse and find out more details. This work can be divided among more than one person too! (Many hands make light work) there will be a meeting March 29 at noon for any parent and/or interested in discussing how and if we might organize for next year.

Requirements:
Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA; attend a local senior high school; and actively participate in school and community activities. To qualify for scholarship funds, applicants must provide evidence that they have been accepted into a two, three, or four-year College or university. Recipients are not eligible to receive a scholarship if they accept a full tuition, room and board scholarship, a three or four year ROTC scholarship, or a military academy appointment.

Iceland Trip Parent meeting – Thursday March 30, 6 pm
Have you ever wanted to travel to Iceland and visit some of the most amazing geographical features in the world? Have you wondered how early settlers of Iceland found the island and how its location influenced events around it? In May 2018, Jason and LeighAnne will be leading a travel intensive to Iceland. Students have already attended two informational meetings, and there has been a lot of interest expressed in this trip. On Thursday, March 30, at 6pm there will be a meeting for parents and students to attend to learn more about this trip, the itinerary, registration, and have an opportunity to ask questions. The meeting will take place in Jason’s room and should last no more than an hour. Please come to learn more about this awesome opportunity to visit one of the most unique places in the world.
