WHEN SICKNESS STRIKES: KNOW WHEN TO KEEP A CHILD HOME FROM SCHOOL

A parent’s decision to keep a child home from school when he or she is sick can sometimes be a difficult one. No parent wants to interrupt their child’s learning, and for some, keeping a child home means missing work or losing pay. Ron Brown Scholar Program’s new high school initiative

The Guided Pathway Support Program (GPS) helps African-American juniors and seniors navigate the path to top colleges by directing students to the most comprehensive and reliable resources available.  This free program, teaches students how to prepare for, apply to, pay for, persist in and graduate from college.

The application will open on March 1, 2017. The deadline to apply is May 31, 2017.

West Ski Team -> Uniform & Gear Return by March 21st

All uniforms and gear at to be returned on Tuesday, March 21st.  Steller students have two options: 

1) Bring them to the Steller lobby at 12:15 on Tuesday the 21st
2) Come to the West ski room immediately after school on Tuesday the 21st

All uniforms are to be washed before return.  If you wish to keep your gear for an event after the 21st such as SKAN, you will need to give Coach Anson a written letter stating why you are holding onto it and when it will be returned.  Fines slips will be going out after the 21st for all items not returned.

Steller Students Did Well in the District Solo/Ensemble Festival

Three students from Steller entered the District Solo/Ensemble Festival at U.A.A last Saturday. They are Bella L. on flute, Sebastien L. on trumpet, and Julia J. on flute. They all played solo pieces in front of a judge. Bella and Sebastien’s solo performances were rated superior; Julia received excellent rating. “Steller has students who are musically inclined”, said Mr. Toba, the band director. “I am proud of the students for their effort and commitment to excel in music performance.” Bella and Sebastien will advance to the state solo/ensemble competition in May.

Summer girls science day camp

Applications for the BRIGHT Girls Summer Academy are Open

BRIGHT Girls offers two-week, free, day-only academies in Fairbanks (July 10-21) and Juneau (July 24-August 4) for high school girls. Participants explore the biology and habitat of salmon (in Fairbanks) or harbor seals (in Juneau). Expect to go boating, take pictures, use science tools and technology, take measurements in the field and the lab, and explore the outdoors with new friends. Who can attend?
Girls entering 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grades in the fall of 2017.
What are the dates?
The 2017 Fairbanks, AK summer academy takes place from July 10- July 21, 2017 (with weekend off). The 2017 Juneau academy takes place from July 24- August 4, 2017 (with weekend off).
What is the cost?
There is no cost to attend the academy, thanks to the generous support of the National Science Foundation. We will provide snacks, but girls are expected to bring a sack lunch daily (with the exception of the overnight trip).
Is lodging available?
No. This is a day program only. Activities generally take place between 9AM-4:30PM (schedule varies on select days), with one overnight trip included.
