Profile in Courage Essay Contest

Celebrate the JFK Centennial by entering the 2017 Profile in Courage Contest. For this year only: the first-place prize will be doubled from $10,000 to $20,000 and cash prizes will be awarded to the top 25 students. Learn more about the special contest topic which pays tribute to the 100th anniversary of JFK’s birth.

The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve attending public, private, parochial, or home schools; US students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high school correspondence/GED program; and US citizens attending schools overseas.

JFK Centennial Awards: First-place winner receives $20,000. Second-place winner receives$1,000. Five finalists receive $500 each. Eighteen essayists receive awards of $100.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – Saturday, October 22nd, 10 AM to 2 PM

If you have any prescription medications that have expired in your cabinets, please take advantage of this weekend event to safely dispose of them. It is not recommended to flush or throw away any prescription drugs down the drain or trash.

Saturday, October 22nd is this fall’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event starts at 10:00 A.M. and ends at 2:00 P.M.
Locations in the Municipality of Anchorage and the central Mat-Su Valley include the following Fred Meyer stores:

Anchorage (two locations): 2300 Abbott Road and 7701 DeBarr Road.

Eagle River: 13401 Old Glenn Highway.

Palmer: 650 South Cobb Street.

Wasilla: 1501 East Parks Highway.

Fall Conferences Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th

Fall Conferences will take place on Wednesday, October 26th and Thursday, October 27th. These are student-led conferences that include the student, parents, and advisor.  Students will have the opportunity to discuss how their
classes are going, to identify areas of challenge and success, and to identify goals for the rest of the school year.

Conferences will be scheduled in 30-minute increments.

Conferences can be scheduled on the district’s online scheduler by following the steps below:
1.Go to http://www.asdk12.org/ConferenceScheduling/StudentScheduleStartExt.aspx
This can also be reached by going to the district web page, clicking on Parent conferences on the left, and then on the Middle School conference scheduler.
2.Choose Steller as the school
3. Choose 7th grade!  In order to work the system, all conferences are scheduled as 7th graders.
4. For Team Name, choose your student’s primary advisor (Conferences will be with the advisor, if you want
to meet with classroom teachers, you will need to schedule a meeting outside of the conference dates.)
5. Choose the date you wish to come in.
6. Choose your time and continue through the process. You can sign up to receive a reminder email.  If you need to cancel your appointment time, please email your advisor.

Individual guidance in Career Exploration and College Planning on Wednesdays!

Individual guidance in Career Exploration and College Planning and Application offered by Marianne on Wednesdays after school in the Orange Lab. This is a great opportunity for juniors to start planning for after high school and for seniors to work on the college application. Students in other grades are welcome as well.

Olympics and Upcoming Schedule

Hello Steller Students and Parents!  This year Steller is holding our Olympics on Tuesday, October25th. This is a fun day focused on Advisory bonding. Each Advisory hosts competitions and everyone competes to help their team win. Teams also dress up and we hold a picnic lunch. Each student should bring something to contribute, so please check below to see what your advisory has been assigned to bring. Also we do need a couple of parents from 10:00-12:00 to help with lunch set up and clean up. Please email Leigh Anne at bonney_leigh@asdk12.org, if you can volunteer.

Food assignments:

Sandwiches for three people – Troy’s, Sventana’s, Rosa’s, Danielle/Ashley’s, Jean’s, Ken’s, Marla’s, and Simone’s

Chips – Philip’s, Bob’s, and Mike’s

Fruit for 3 – Leigh Anne’s, Jason’s, Becky’s, and Brian’s

October 21: No School – Inservice

October 25: Steller Olympics

October 26 and 27: Half Days – Student-Led Conferences (School Day ends at 11:35)

October 27: Halloween dance at 7PM

October 28: No School-Inservice

Phones need to be shut off and stay underneath the table

Water bottles/snack stay underneath the table

No hats please

Assigned seats

Total testing time including administration is approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes

Two 5-minute breaks to stretch

The 15-dollar fee has to be paid before students can take the test

 

College visit

Whitman College will visit Steller during lunch Tuesday October 18th. Louise Karneus, Admissions Officer at Whitman, will be available outside the front office from Noon. I encourage parents and students to stop by. Whitman is located in Walla Walla, WA and is on the list of Colleges That Change Lives.
