Congratulations, Bella and Sebastien!

Steller students, Bella L and Sebastien L, have been accepted to the 2016 ASAA All-State Band and Orchestra.  Bella, a senior flautist, and Sebastien, a freshman trumpeter, competed, through audition process, among the most talented high school musicians in state, to earn the spots in the prestigious student ensembles.  “For Bella, she has made the All-State Band and Orchestra for four straight years, and that is an accomplishment that only a few high school students may achieve,” said, Mr. Toba, the band director.  “I can not find a word to describe how proud I am of Bella.”  “Sebastien is only a 9th grader, and he has already made BOTH the All-State and Orchestra, which is quite an accomplishment.  He has three more years to even get better with his playing,”  Mr. Toba added.  The All State Band and Orchestra will have a gala concert on Saturday, November 18 in the West High School Auditorium, at 6 p.m.  Admission will be 10 dollars for adults, 5 dollars for students.  Public is invited.

Call for participants: Alaska State Mock Trial Competition

Leigh Anne is looking for a group of high school students that are interested in competing in the Alaska State Mock Trial Competition. The competition will be held in Anchorage Feb. 28-March 2. Students need to commit to reading the case file over the winter break, showing up to practices that will be at lunch or after school, depending on the team; doing outside work at homepreparing for the case; and being there for the whole weekend of the competition.

The mission is surveying the hundreds of billions of stars in our region of the Milky Way galaxy to determine thefraction of the hundreds of Earth-size and smaller planets with “habitable zone,”-where liquid water might exist on the surface of the planet.  The presentation, including photos and video taken from the spacecraft, is sure to interest all ages, so bring the kids!

Cyrano’s has no admission fee (donations welcome) but seating is limited. Come early to purchase refreshments and compete in a science trivia contest with a prize for the winning team. Anchorage Science Pub is a local not-for-profit designed to stimulate interest in science through brief, entertaining presentations on interesting science topics at local venues.
