STELLER AUCTION

The annual Steller Auction is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 from 6:00-10:00 in the MPR.  This fundraiser is sponsored by the Freshman class; planned and organized with the help of Parent Group.  Some 9th grade parents met last Tuesday, and began planning the event.  We are still in need of parents to help with ideas & planning ahead of time.  There are opportunities to help with decorations, food, publicity, program, & entertainment, as well as the daily logging in and inventory of donations as they come in.  Please join the Auction Committee meeting on Tuesdays, at 6:00 pm in Ken’s room from now until April 2, or email us at steller.auction@gmail.com to volunteer.

Blood Drive Wednesday, February 16th

Dear Parents,

Steller is hosting its first blood drive on Wednesday, February 16th. The drive will start at 12:00 p.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. Students age 16-17 must have a permission slip signed and dated for the 16th (these will be handed out again on Monday and are available on the whiteboard). In addition parents are welcome to donate, if your child has a conference  on Wednesday and you have a little extra time (45-60 minutes) please take the time to donate blood. Each donation can save up to 3 lives. Additionally, the Blood Bank is the only provider of blood to 24 Alaskan Hospitals, so each donation counts.
If you have any questions please contact Julie Adelman at adelman.julia@gmail.com or on her cell phone at (907) 229- 1820
Thank you.

Steller’s Curse–The Unfortunate Fate Of Alaska’s First Naturalist And The Marine Animals That Bear His Name

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about our school’s namesake.  Students, parents, and staff are encouraged to attend.

Steller’s Curse–The Unfortunate Fate Of Alaska’s First Naturalist And The Marine Animals That Bear His Name will be presented Wednesday, February 16 at 7pm at the BLM Campbell Creek Science Center. Georg Steller was the physician and naturalist on Vitus Bering’s second expedition to search for the connection between Asia and North America. Along the way, Steller became the first Westerner to collect and scientifically describe numerous animals and plants, including the first scientific accounts of the Steller sea lion, the northern fur seal, the sea otter, and the Steller’s sea cow. A few of these species, like Steller himself, did not survive for long after that fateful voyage and others have recently been threatened with extinction.

Join us as RUSS ANDREWS of the Alaska Sealife Center and the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UAF, shares more about Steller’s discoveries, discusses more recent scientific research conducted on many of these same species in far eastern Russia and Alaska, and describes the high-tech equipment that is enabling scientists to increase our understanding of the animals that have fallen under Steller’s curse. Please call 267-1241 for more information.

University of Alaska Summer Science Programs

There’s some great science at UAS and UAF this summer for high school students!

Time is of the essence — the window for students to apply is SOON and BRIEF — Feb. 14 – 28 — yep, a two week window, just around the corner.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to check out Discover Design Research @ UAS (DDR) and Alaska Summer Research Academy (ASRA) at UAF – two stellar camps with one application process.

Ingredients that make these 2 programs successful:
* 12 day residential camps
* 1 college credit
* 8-10 students per module (course), with outstanding instructors
* hands-on, minds-on, challenging academics – students DOING the science and engineering
* University based experience (get a leg up on college!)
