Haiti Fundraiser Report

This year, Steller Secondary School partnered with The American Red Cross of Alaska – Haiti Earthquake Relief to raise money to help support those impacted by the earthquakes that devastated Haiti on January 12, 2010.  The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.

We asked students and their families to empty their coin jar, search couch cushions, check old pockets, and empty car coin stashes all in an attempt to put that spare change to good use.

Steller students got to work bringing in spare change, selling paper red cross logos to hang on the wall, and popcorn during lunch.  The paper red cross logos slowly took over an entire wall.  Everyone seemed to enjoy seeing which advisory group had the most logos.  Each day, a “Red Cross/Haiti Update” was written on our announcement board and included an interesting fact about coins and a fact a

bout Haiti or the Red Cross.  Students voted each week on which teacher they wanted to see get duct taped to the wall in our “stuck for a buck” fundraiser held during lunch on each Friday of our two-week coin drive.  Students, staff, and even parents then bought strips of duct tape to stick a Steller teacher to the wall.  In our second week of fundraising students were able to purchase valentines that were delivered to their classrooms.  On the last day of our fundraiser, Jen Strauss and Danielle Sjoden’s Advisory groups hosted a valentine dance with the $475.73 proceeds benefitting the fundraiser.

In the end, we were able to raise $2,535.86, an impressive amount for a school of only 263 students.

Thanks again, to all of you who worked so hard and donated money to make this fundraiser so successful for the American Red Cross of Alaska Haiti Earthquake Relief!

VALENTINE’S GIFT WRAPPING PROJECT

AT THE MALL AT SEARS ON SATURDAY

The SHANLEY/TONI ADVISORY GROUP will be doing a FUNDRAISER on Saturday, February 13th from 11:00 A.M.- 5:00 P.M. at The Mall at Sears.

We will be doing Valentine Gift Wrapping for donations to help pay for a Smile Train Cleft Palate Surgery for a disadvantaged child.

We did gift wrapping in December at another location and earned $65, so we need to continue with our fundraising to pay for a $250 surgery.

Although the Sears Mall will be providing a table and chairs, we NEED DONATIONS OF VALENTINE GIFT WRAP, RIBBON, & TAPE. We could also use Valentine’s cards, cupcakes, cakes, cookies, candy—-ANYTHING TO DO WITH VALENTINE’S DAY that we can sell to raise more money.

Please support us by coming to the Sears Mall on Saturday.  We need students and parents to help with set-up, clean-up, and gift wrapping. Your help will really be appreciated!

Haiti Update

Our first week of fundraising is over and we are doing a great job.  Lunch time popcorn and paper red crosses have sold about $250 so far this week.  Friday at lunch, teachers and student’s paid for strips of duct tape to tape Philip, one of our science teachers to the wall and raised nearly $120 in less than 30 minutes!  Next week we will be selling candy valentines at lunch and advisory groups will get to vote on which teacher they would like to tape to the wall on Friday 2/12/10.

Steller’s coin drive will run from 2/1/10 through 2/12/10.

The advisory group who raises the most money will be treated to a pizza party!

So far, it looks like Natalie’s advisory group is in the lead with Nina’s advisory group in hot pursuit.  Advisory group’s collection jars will be counted by Monday, so stay tuned as this may change who is in the lead.

Donations can be spare change, cash, check, or made online @ via the American Red Cross website. https://alaska.secureweb1.org//index.php#donate_form (Secure page link)  Please be sure to write Steller and your student’ name in the “remember someone special” box.  This will be the only way we will know it is from Steller and for which Advisory Group.  Checks should be made out to the American Red Cross of Alaska.

I can’t thank all of you enough for the donations we have collected already.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at 742-4963 or Williams_wendy@asdk12.org.

American Red Cross Coin Drive

It’s time to empty that coin jar!  This year, Steller Secondary students chose Haiti Earthquake Relief through the American Red Cross of Alaska as our annual coin drive fundraiser.

On January 12, 2010, a series of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.5 to 7.3 devastated Haiti. The American Red Cross is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross, and other partners to assist those affected by this disaster.

So empty your coin jar, check those couch cushions and turn your pockets inside out and lets put the estimated $10.5 billion in loose change that sits idle in American households to a good cause.

Steller’s coin drive will run from 2/1/10 through 2/12/10.

The advisory group who raises the most money will be treated to a pizza party!
