Look in on the Toy-Building Intensive this week, and you’ll probably see something that looks like Santa’s workshop!

In the Art Room, Steller students are sawing, drilling, sewing dolls, stringing puppets, and building cars. The Toy Building Intensive students are happily making toys, some of which will be donated to children at the AWAIC shelter to help them through the holidays.

Travel Intensive Planning for Next Year

Oh the places that we will go! The staff has started to plan next year’s travel intensives. The four trips will be a bike trip into Denali, an American heritage trip to New York City and Washington D.C., an adventure to Costa Rica, and either a trip to Australia and New Zealand or Ashland, Oregon’s Shakespeare Festival. Read below to find out more! Even though trips aren’t happening until next year, students will be registering for them this year. Listen to advisory announcements, talk to teachers traveling, and watch the Flash for meetings, scholarship deadlines, and registration dates.

Our first Intensive will be from August 25th-September 5th and there will be two exciting trips during that time: Ride your bike to Denali National Park – Get ready for the biking trip of a lifetime!  What is the best way to start the school year? Being able to brag to all of your friends that you biked all the way to Denali National Park on your fall intensive. Join Jen and Mike in this intensive as we bike from Wasilla to Riley Campground in Denali. We will spend a day taking a shuttle into Denali to see amazing views of the mountain as well as seeing all the wildlife. Then enjoy a relaxing train ride back to Anchorage.  If this bike ride seems daunting, don’t worry, we will spend the first week preparing ourselves for the trip by biking around Anchorage and learning about bike safety and maintenance.  Plus you will have all summer to prepare for this intensive!  If you get out and bike a few times a week all summer (building up to riding 20 miles at a time or 2 hours) you will be ready for this trip.  Questions about this intensive?  Come talk to Jen!  We will have an informational meeting early next semester.

Interested in traveling to two of the most exciting cities in our country and arguably the world? Join this American Heritage trip to New York City and Washington D.C. to visit some of the greatest cultural and historical sites in our country. We will spend four days in Washington D.C. visiting museums, including the Holocaust Museum, Museum of Air and Space, and the National Gallery of Art. We will also visit many of the outdoor monuments, memorials, George Washington’s home at Mt. Vernon, and Arlington Cemetery. Students will also look at the workings of our government by visiting the White House, Supreme Court, and Capital Building. We will then move onto New York City, where we will explore the city, visit museums, and walk through Chinatown. We will also take in a Broadway show and Major League Baseball game. Students will visit Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the 9/11 Memorial. Other sites our on our agenda, so contact Leigh Anne at bonney_leigh@asdk12.org to find out more. The cost of the trip will be approximately $2540, which includes everything but lunches. A parent meeting will be held on January 15th at 6:00, scholarship applications will be due on February 5th. Students will be able to start registering in January.

The second Intensive will be in March and will include the following two amazing trips:

Monkeys, toucans, and sloths, oh my!  Students have the opportunity to join Danielle and Ashley on a 10-day trip to Costa Rica during next year’s March intensive. We will explore lush tropical rainforests, geologic wonders like volcanoes and waterfalls, and the stunning Pacific coast. Highlights of the trip include visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest, which has more than a hundred species of mammals, 120 reptiles and amphibians and 2,500 different plants; taking a guided night hike to look for nocturnal animals; rafting through the rainforest and ziplining through the forest canopy; and visiting Mt. Arenal, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, and swimming in the hot springs at its base. Students do not have to be in Spanish to take this intensive, although there will be opportunities for Spanish students to practice their language skills. The cost of the trip will be between $2800 and $3200, depending on how many students enroll. If you’re interested in the Costa Rica intensive, talk to Danielle or Ashley and stay tuned for an announcement about our first trip meeting next semester.

Bob is looking into the following Intensive ideas-Australia/New Zealand or visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. The choice will be determined by the amount of interest in (or number of people able to participate in) the overseas trip. Right now, the trip to Australia alone is $4550 and the trip to Australia and New Zealand is $4790. The focus would be experiencing the unique flora and fauna of the regions. As for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival trip, it ran around $1300 the last time we went. We would be watching world-class productions of plays and take workshops with folks from the company. Please talk to Bob about which trip you would be interested in going on and listen for meeting announcements during second semester.
