The Youth Alliance for a Healthier Alaska (YAHA) will be celebrating 9 years of Youth Voice in Alaska Public Health in 2017!  Youth can help shape the way the State of Alaska responds to important teen issues such as mental health, relationships, violence prevention, nutrition, trauma and resiliency. If you know a young person in your school or community that would like to learn more about Public Health in Alaska, please encourage them to apply today!  The attached flyers can be shared on social media along with the short link below for direct access to our YAHA website.

Spring Break Ironwork/Welding Pre-apprenticeship Academy ASD Spring Break 2017 Ironwork Welding

Monday March 13^th – Friday March 17^th   8am-5pm      Location-KCC Welding lab

     If you missed out on the KCC welding program, or just want to learn even more from professional welders and ironworkers.  This class is for you.  With this on your resume, employers will know that you are serious about a career in welding and iron working.

Students in Spanish classes will be assessed using the STAMP assessment to determine their language level based on national proficiency levels.  These assessments will take place the week of March 27th-March 31st during students’ regular Spanish classes. Makeup testing will be the following week from April 3rd-7th.  This is a great opportunity to see how well students can use the language they are learning. Please read the attached letter from the director of World Languages, Brandon Locke, to learn more. If you have any questions, please contact Ashley or Rosa.

APS is available to qualifying Alaska high school students pursuing a college education or career training in Alaska.

Eligibility is based on

• GPA
• SAT or ACT scores
• Specified high school curriculum

Eligibility is evaluated by Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) based on information submitted by the school district.

The specified curriculum is based on two main criteria

• Meeting the unit requirements in 4 to 5 subject areas
• Subject area courses need to be on the APS approved list for Anchorage School District

Some students may not be approved for the scholarship and ACPE will refer students to their high school counselor. If this happens, please contact me as soon as the fall semester starts, and I will look into the issue. Please keep in mind that not all high school graduates will qualify for the APS.

Seniors who plan to attend a postsecondary educational institution in Alaska can come and talk with me about their transcript the last few weeks of the school year. I will look at transcripts as time allows in April.

Students with low SAT or ACT scores have the opportunity to retake the test during spring. Please make sure you have the scores sent to Steller; otherwise, they will not be sent to ACPE.
