Season Greetings from Alaska Writing Project!
If you participated in a retreat last year or the summer institute, we want to thank you for your professionalism and passion. And we want to assure you that we have some great AWP events in the works for the spring semester. We’re kicking 2017 off with a first Friday writing event at the Museum on January 6th.
Writers of all ages are welcome. Bring your friends, bring your kids.
Drop in for 5 minutes or stay and write with us for the evening.
We hope to see you there!
~From all of us at AWP, have an inspired winter break and write on!
Free glaciology and marine programs for girls ages 16 to 17
Inspiring Girls Expeditions is accepting applications through Jan. 31 for free summer science and wilderness expeditions in Alaska and Washington for girls ages 16 to 17.
Three teams of up to nine teenage girls and three instructors will spend 12 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers or fjords with tidewater glaciers. They’ll conduct scientific field studies with professional glaciologists, oceanographers, artists and mountaineers.
The three Inspiring Girls trips of 2017 will include Girls on Ice Alaska, Girls On Ice Cascades and Girls in Icy Fjords. They are operated through the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Natural Science and Mathematics and the International Arctic Research Center.
Girls participate in these programs tuition-free through small grants, gifts from individuals and support from the National Science Foundation, the Department of the Interior Alaska Climate Science Center and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Anchorage Youth Court New Member Classes
Anchorage Youth Court will be holding TWO new member classes for youth in grades 7 – 12 next year. This is a great opportunity for your students to learn about Anchorage Youth Court’s juvenile diversion program and how they can help their community.
Winter Class: January 21 & 28 and February 4 & 11 at Service High School
Spring Class: April 29, May 6, 13, & 20 at West High School
Youth interested in AYC must take the class (four consecutive Saturdays) before they begin volunteering. Students will learn about the court system and how to prepare to handle AYC court cases. After they take the class and become a new member, they can volunteer their time in trainings, adjudicating cases for their peers, and other volunteer opportunities throughout the community.
Registration is open NOW!
Deadline for the winter class: Tuesday, January 17.
Registration for the spring class begins February 1.
There is a $25 registration fee. Low income waivers are available.

Polar Plunge Success
Steller raised $1000 dollars for the Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics through three fundraisers: the penny drive, the middle school drama performance When Four Teenagers Elope, and the fashion show musical breakfast during intensives. Thanks for the attendance at these community events that raised money for eight Steller students to jump in icy Goose Lake for Freezin’ for a Reason.
While we are showing appreciation, I’d like to thank Sarah Stevens for teaching the swim intensive the first week and Kid’s Don’t Float for training our kids in the classroom and in the pool. Participation with community outside develops community within our school.
Recognition for students
If you’d would like to share personal interest stories, events, awards, etc. about a Steller student, please contact Dana Dardis @ ddardis@gmail.com.
