Mother Bear Update

10th grader Megan M knitted bears for the Mother Bear Project charity as part of her 9th grade passages class this Spring.  She raised cash for their transportation to their new owners (“their bear fares”) by holding bake sales at Steller.

A huge Thank You! to all students and staff who bought goodies at these sales as they raised $172 Dollars for the Charity!

The bears take a while to travel from Alaska to the Charities headquarters in the Lower 48 and then carry on their journey to the continent of Africa.

Not all bears are photographed with their new owners but Megan promised to post as many  pictures as she could find of bears sent with the money raised at Steller.

Allison O – School Supply Drive

Allison O (11th grade) is doing a Passage this semester in preparation for her upcoming trip to Uganda, Africa this December. Part of her Passage is getting Steller involved in her Passage and the organization One World Today. One World Today is a non-profit organization that provides educational opportunities for girls in Uganda, especially in the Ssese Islands, where Allison will be spending most of her time. In Uganda, it is rare for girls to be educated because it is often unsafe for girls to walk to the public schools and strict gender roles often keep girls at home. One World Today has a boarding school in the Ssese Islands that is 100% safe for girls to attend, and, in order to prevent financial issues from keeping impoverished girls home from school, have set up a program in which American families pay for a girl’s tuition and room/board in exchange for letters sent between them and the girl. Allison’s friend Immaculate goes to the One World Today boarding school.

Allison is hosting a drive from October 10th (this Monday) to November 11th for school supplies to send to the One World Today school. People can donate:

  • Pencils
  • Paper
  • Calculators (scientific and regular)
  • Notebooks
  • Pens (red, blue, and black)
  • Backpacks/bookbags
  • Pencil sharpeners
  • Old textbooks
  • Highlighters
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Erasers
  • Rulers

These supplies will be sent to the One World Today school after November 11th.

Additionally, there will be a reward for the advisory that donates the most school supplies! Just write your name and what you donated on the sheet with your advisor’s name on it.

Cash donations are accepted! If you have any questions, please ask Allison.

REMINDER: Proposals due to Grant Committee NEXT WEEK!!

Students, parents and staff members alike are welcome to submit proposals no later than THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13th (Grant Committee Documents can be found and submitted to Haley in the office).
This fund was established to fund projects that make Steller a better place for the community and to directly benefit all who attend.

Your project, costing $500 or more, must be able to fit into the following categories:
1. Does the project make Steller a better place for most everyone?
2. Does the project increase the visibility of Steller within the larger community?
3. Does the project reflect our values of learning through experience?
4. Will the project directly benefit a large group of people, i.e. an entire class or the whole school?
The Grant Committee is a GREAT way to practice your competitive writing and presentation skills. We take the idea of handing out thousands of dollars seriously so come prepared!

If you are submitting a proposal you (or your representative) must be able to present the idea at the Grant Committee meeting scheduled for October 17th at 3:00 pm.

If you have questions about this process please contact Karen Gillis (karenlgillis@me.com or 907-887-1148).
