Looking for Tomorrow’s Math and Science Visionaries
From now until October 7, Khan Academy and Breakthrough Prize are seeking video submissions that explain a challenging and important concept or theory in mathematics, life sciences, or physics. If you’re between 13 and 18, and you have a passion for explaining ideas and concepts creatively, you can enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge!
Learn more about the Breakthrough Junior Challenge
Not only can you dig into a topic that you’re passionate about, but there are also great prizes to be won, including a $250,000 scholarship for you, a $50,000 award for your teacher, and a state-of-the-art $100,000 science lab for your school. The winner will also be invited to the televised red carpet 2016 Breakthrough Prize ceremony in Silicon Valley, where the prize will be awarded in front of the superstars of science, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood.
If you enter, you’ll view and assess other participants’ videos in a peer-to-peer review process. Submissions will then be assessed by leaders in science, technology, and education from Khan Academy and by Breakthrough Prize laureates. The judges will select a winner based on how engaging, illuminating, and creative their video is, and how challenging the concept is to understand.
The deadline for submissions is October 7, so register today at www.breakthroughjuniorchallenge.org. We hope you’ll be inspired to get involved – and share your passion for understanding the world!
Volunteers Still Needed for the Library
Steller Library wants to thank the parent volunteers who have committed to being here at lunch to keep the library available to students!
And, we still have a few days available to volunteer–Mondays and Wednesdays are still open if you are considering ways to help out. If the commitment of every week is a bit much, doing it 2x/ month or so is another possibility…
Please email me if interested! Jennifer Hall Jones –hall-jones_jennifer@asdk12.org
Need to Talk to the School Counselor?
Please help stock emergency food supply
Â
Hello Families,
Now that our school year is off and running, I am hoping to get some help meeting some basic needs for our students. For numerous reasons, there are times when some students are in need of something to eat for lunch. Maybe they forgot it or didn’t have time to pack one. Perhaps they can’t afford to purchase it. Regardless, we try to have something available for our students who may benefit from semi-healthy snacks at lunchtime or as an emergency backup.
During your next visit to Costco or other grocery store, please think about picking up a healthy food item to help stock our emergency supply. Please – No high fructose corn syrup or trans fats! Items that are high in protein and low in sodium and sugar are always best. Things like fruit cups, applesauce, protein bars, veggie drinks, etc. are wonderful. Nourishing microwaveable items are also a plus (instant mac & cheese cups, chili cups, lentil soups…). Other non-perishable items will also be gladly accepted.
Thanks so much! Nurse Annette
Ad Board Meeting 9/17/15 6-7:30 pm
Steller Parents, Teachers, and Staff are warmly invited
First Ad Board Meeting of the Year
September 17 6-7:30pm
Ad Board is the one body of the school comprised of parents, students and staff members. The primary function of Ad Board is to speak as a voice for the Steller community to provide policy guidance for the school and advise the Principal on the Steller community direction. This is a key feature of school governance that makes Steller unique!
Thank you to the parents who agreed to serve on this committee (list forthcoming), along with students and staff.
Students and Parent Members – Please call your alternates if you cannot be there; make sure your groups are represented! If you need transportation, please call Alyse at 884-2299.
This is a rare opportunity for students and parents in any school, nationwide, to have the opportunity to lead and be on a school body that makes the decisions that this Ad Board does. We will be excited to see you there and we will have board member binders with your name on it!
As with all meetings at Steller (except when there is a need for executive session in staff meetings) ALL MEETINGS ARE PUBLIC and every community member is welcome!!
Draft agenda HERE.
