Steller Clean-up … Friday, April 28

Hey there, I need some help getting excitement stirred up about Anchorage clean-up! 
 
Friday: Isn’t break-up seasons beautiful?! When the snow melts and the trash emerges, WE need to step in and do a bit of spring cleaning around Anchorage. Certainly you have seen others picking up trash in the end of April, and this is your chance to participate in the coordinated city-wide effort. Clean-up begins on Friday, April 28 and will be going strong through Saturday. Steller will be participating as a team by tackling as much of the surrounding area as we can. Prizes will be awarded to the top collectors but we will also have extra bags and gloves for you to spread the cleaning to your local neighborhoods. See Brian, or just show up in the lounge after school 3:15 on Friday, April 28.

Seawolf summer sports camp … June 5-30, July 10-28

UAA is offering a summer sports camp for kids.  There are 2 weeks that you can sign up for the hockey and sports camp portion (although those weeks are filling up fast).  But, if your child doesn’t want to be a part of the hockey portion, they are running a camp without hockey during those weeks.

The camp is being run by the UAA hockey coaches and, several of their players will be the camp counselors.  The camp will run for 7 weeks and you can sign up for as many weeks as you would like.  $199 per week.

There are lots of spots available and the kids will able to swim, play a lot of different sports/games and they get to hang out with some Seawolf hockey players this summer!

Funding cuts

Parents and Students,
The Steller staff is being reduced.
Due to educational funding cutbacks, ASD has reorganized the amount of teachers in a building based on teacher-to-student ratios.
Our state legislators are working in Juneau and are considering CUTTING even more of the educational budget.
We hear different positions in the news. From my understanding, the current cuts are most definitely going to affect what we can offer our students (including Intensives).  These cuts will affect your child’s education.

What does this mean to Steller?

With the original funding cuts, and an increase in our projected enrollment, we currently are losing 1.4 teachers. This equates to two teachers!
In addition to the loss of the individuals who are a part of our close-knit community, we are currently trying to schedule next year with eight less classes per semester and 2-4 less Intensives per semester offered.
There are many different outlets to voice your reactions to the above news. Please have you opinions heard. We need your support.

Zoo: Bear Aware – May 14

Bear Aware at the Alaska Zoo
Sunday, May 14th, 2017; Noon to 4pm
Are YOU Bear Aware?  Brush up on bear safety information while enjoying a fun event focused on safely living and recreating in bear country.  Observe bear-resistant trash container tests and enjoy bear-related activities.  The event is from noon to 4pm and is made possible by the Anchorage Bear Committee and Partner Groups: Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Zoo, Bureau of Land Management, Alaska Botanical Garden, Visit Anchorage, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Geological Services.  It’s Mother’s Day, moms get into the zoo for FREE!

International Migratory Bird Day 2017: Helping Birds Along the Way
